I went to Byron today and the beach just north was very open and windswept???I think kings Beach just south would be better and I will try that next time. The gays don't worry me as they are usually very friendly and keep to themselves...
A really good free beach in NSW is Birdie Beach just south of Newcastle...it's secluded but not too far to walk. The surf is great and there are usually more couples than singles there on a warm busy day...it also has an alcove to protect against the wind...it really is a lovely beach with access on a hot mix tarred road all the way with brand new toilets and parking area...
