Katoomba is the kind of town that gets cold fast and, in my world, that means noodle soup. A meal so delicious it's surely up there with penicillin and the wheel as the greatest achievement of humankind. After about twenty-five years of exhaustive research, I offer you the definitive list of noodle soups in Katoomba. I will be taking no questions at this time.

** #5 - Pho - Basil Nut Cafe & Restaurant - $17
5/147-153 Katoomba St**

A delicate dish, the pho at Basil Nut is steaming and fragrant. The beef is tender, the noodles delightfully slippery, the mint fresh and zippy, and the broth somehow sweet and savoury and complex all at once.

** #4 - Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup - Sanwiye Korean Cafe - $13
2/177 Katoomba St**

There are a couple of highlights in this dish. Firstly, the broth. Spicy with a nice kick. The noodles look like Maggi noodles and taste about fifteen million times better. The addition of enoki mushrooms kicks this up an extra notch to awesome. There's also a non-seafood option available.

** #3 - Chinese Roast Duck with Egg noodle and Five Spiced Duck Broth - Basil Nut Cafe - $20
5/147-153 Katoomba St**

A second mention of the incomparable Basil Nut Cafe on this list because they do noodle soups, and everything else, really well. If five spice is your jam, this is the noodle soup for you. The duck is rich and satisfying. The egg noodle is satisfyingly chewy and the broth is a five-spice devotees heaven, fully flavoured but not overpowering.

** #2 - Hot and Sour Soup - Canton Palace - $8
246 Katoomba St**

Not technically a noodle soup but included on this list because it's just that delicious. There are so many goodies packed into this bowl, it's barely even a soup. Chicken, prawns, BBQ pork, tofu and the kind of addictive flavour that makes you seriously considering ordering it for a main as well as an entree.

** #1 - Laksa - The Three Sisters BBQ Chinese Restaurant - $15
198 Katoomba St**

Let us all bow our heads and give thanks for this wondrous restaurant. I'd love to tell you about everything on their menu (it all looks delicious) but I've been going here for twenty-five years and still order the laksa every time. Firstly, it's enormous. You probably won't finish it. The broth isn't overwhelmingly rich like many laksas tend to be, and it's packed full of sprouts, noodles, veggies and deep-fried tofu. I usually go with the prawn option, but there's a whole range to choose from.
