Wii Fit Plus is an excellent statistic tracker and is best used for logging weight loss endeavours rather than taking copious notes on paper that you might lose. The Wii Balance Board is a nifty wireless device that you can stand on. It can measure your body weight, and using manually entered data such as height, it can also calculate where you fit in the body mass index (BMI).

BMI can give you a close approximation as to whether you are obese, at your ideal weight or underweight. Wii Fit Plus is not a substitute for the opinion of a doctor or a fitness expert so obviously use common sense with all of the information that is imparted via this game. It is a game after all.

The Wii Balance Board and the mini games on Wii Fit Plus are more than just fancy gimmicks. You can improve your balance or at least be made aware of your posture by how much weight you distribute between each foot.

At the end of each week, or when you decide to see how you are going with your fitness schedule, the Wii Fit Plus can test you to determine your 'Wii Fit Plus age'. This age variable takes balance and hand-eye coordination into consideration as well as your height and weight.

Wii Fit Plus can also show how much weight you have lost or gained each time you log on. For long-term use this is ideal for working towards goals and milestones.

There are yoga and muscle workout exercises on Wii Fit Plus but unfortunately they are lame. The loading times between different moves as well as the longwinded explanations make for a very boring session.

Program design is easy. Simply pick from a range of different activities and difficulty levels. The more you choose to do the longer the overall workout session will be.

These programs can be added to a calendar to be a part of your routine. This is an effective way of meeting your goals and exercising regularly.

In addition to your own training there are also three randomised achievements to unlock each day. These ensure that you are trying different things. These achievements can be as simple as burning a certain number of calories while performing an intense arms workout or dancing along to Lady Gaga's Born This Way for example.

Workout styles range from fighting to dancing so find a style that works best for you.

Cardio training is a lot of fun and involves a mix of jogging on the spot and performing yoga stretches and other moves that work your whole body. The trainer on-screen demonstrates these activities very well and the background indicates progress, or how far into the routine you are, by having trees burst through walls and blossom while indoor studios have random items materialise.

The Wii U GamePad can be left on the charging stand to show the countdown timer.

The other use for the GamePad is to sit on the floor and attempt a zen session. Hold the GamePad upright and follow the energy ball on the screen by breathing, adjusting your core muscles and moving the GamePad accordingly.

As you complete different sessions you can unlock new content like different trainers and more advanced workout techniques.

If you are serious about improving your fitness then you should know that playing a few games and jumping around in front of a television is simply not enough. These games should encourage you to live a more active lifestyle.

Try walking, jogging or riding a bike for at least 30 minutes a day in addition to the activities you complete on the Wii U.

You should also be mindful of what you eat and drink on a daily basis. To lose weight the best thing to cut is your liquid calorie intake. That means weaning yourself off soft drink.

A sensible and balanced diet is also required to sustain yourself with your day-to-day exercises and general wellbeing.
