Spark your curiosity these school holidays. Get dirty with archaeology, discover space, learn what convict life was like or celebrate NAIDOC week. With so many museums, there are plenty of fun activities on offer. These are my favourite museums to inspire young minds. Where will you be taking your kids these holidays?

AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM

There are plenty of activities for children of all ages at the Australian Museum.

Matjka-wuma (String Figures)

In celebration of NAIDOC Week, join the Australian Museum's First Nations staff in making traditional string figures. Learn how to make string figures such as 'weitj djen' (emu foot) from Balardung Country in Western Australia and how to craft bush string or cordage using natural fibres.



WHEN: 7–14 July, 10.30am–1.30pm

LOCATION: Level 2, Education Classroom
AGE: 7 plus, but all welcome!

Puppetry workshop: Shadowscapes!

Presented by the Matriark Theatre Company, children can adventure to the moon and other worlds in this half day workshop by creating shadowscapes.



Combining art and science, children will experiment with shadow puppetry, light, illustration and physical theatre.

Please note, this is a child only event and adults are required to sign children in and out on arrival and departure. Please bring morning or afternoon tea.

DATES: 15 July & 16 July, 10am–12pm & 2–4pm

Science Workshop: Earth, Sun and Moon

Children will discover how our solar system works in this hands-on workshop by investigating how the Earth, moon and sun work in the solar system, how the Earth's tilt affects the seasons, and the difference between a star, a planet and a moon.



Please note, this is a child only event and adults are required to sign children in and out on arrival and departure. Please bring morning or afternoon tea.

DATES: 9 July & 11 July, 2–3.30pm

AGES: 8 - 12 years

Scientist for a Day: Archaeologist

Budding archaeologists can get hands-on with history with this full day program .



Join Bundjalung archaeologist, Courtney Marsh and learn how archaeology uses science to paint a picture of how the First Nations People lived, used resources and adapted to environmental change.

This program includes a behind-the-scenes tour of the conservation lab, a bread-making workshop using grinding stones and the oldest recipe in the world, dig site activities, games and more!

Bookings are essential.

DATES: 17 & 18 July, 9am–4pm
COST: Child $125, Member Child $105
MEETING POINT: Crystal Hall entrance, corner of William and College streets. Staff will greet group at 9am.
AGES: 8 - 12 years.

ROUSE HILL HOUSE AND FARM

Rouse Hill House & Farm has been created in LEGO® and features amazing models of the Rouse Hill House, outbuildings, stable and barns. Constructed with architectural details by the Southern Hemisphere's only LEGO®-certified professional, Australia's Ryan McNaught, the exhibition inspires visitors to create their own house and farm with over 200,000 loose LEGO® bricks.



Youngsters will also be kept entertained with the special DUPLO® wall.

    ELIZABETH FARM

    Convict Kids

    Convict children came straight off the ship and got to work on the Macarthur Estate. Children are invited to do the same these school holidays. Mr Macarthur is returning from England and the table needs to be set, clothes washed and the bed made.

    Children can then try writing their name with a quill to receive their ticket of leave before relaxing with some games in the garden.



    Please wear enclosed shoes, hats and sunscreen.

    Bookings are essential. Please note that tickets are required for both children and adults. All tickets include house entry.

    VAUCLUSE HOUSE

    Family Nightlight Tour

    As the sun goes down, Vaucluse House will be illuminated by candles and take on a life of its own. Guests are invited to step into the shoes of the people who once worked and lived there.

    Whether you choose to play games by candlelight or polish silver by the roaring fire, the whole family will have the opportunity to explore the house during this interactive evening.



    Refreshments will be provided in the colonial kitchen.

    SUSANNAH HOUSE

    Playing Shop

    At Susannah House , children will become shopkeepers and get behind the counter. Activities include using an old-fashioned shop scale, packaging up goods, filling an order, writing up orders on a slate board and creating a dolly peg shop keeper.



    Children will even make a paper cone for the lollies they will be taking home.

    Full guided tours of the museum will be available at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm at an additional cost.

    Bookings are essential. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All children and adults must purchase a ticket.
