It is official, summer in Great Britain is the greatest joke ever. With rains battering down outside as though it is seeking vengeance and the weather in complete doldrums; the only option we have is to stick inside with a warm cuppa. To help you get out of your rainy blues, I've got a list of movies that will bring some much needed cheer whilst you stay huddled in bed.

1) Stranger than Fiction:-

Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) is a socially isolated, extremely organised IRS auditor and Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson) is a best-selling author whose pro-longed writing block has stunted her creative abilities. Their lives collide when his life becomes the subject of her narration, her upcoming work. A voice follows him and states his each activity with detailed perfection. But only her can hear this voice and there is an impending doom because Kay wants to kill off Harold at the end of her work.

The "voice" follows him everywhere when he is forming a friendship with a pleasant looking, tax-evading baker (Maggie Gyllenhaal) or seeking counsel from literature professor (Dustin Hoffman). Way out of Harold's control, this amusing terror becomes the center of his life. But will Kay kill her hero or will she not? Directed by Marc Forester (Finding Neverland) the film also includes Queen Latifah in a guest role.

2) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:-

Let's admit it: we've all wanted to erase the memory of the time when our relationships have taken a sour turn. This is the main premise of this off-beat romantic comedy by Michel Gondry. Joel (Jim Carrey) is a timid, shy boy who finds, much to his chagrin that his sparky, full-of-life girl friend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has undergone a medical procedure to erase him from her memory. Wounded, he decides to do the same.

But as Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson) and his underlings Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Patrick (Elijah Wood) are all set to perform the operation on Joel -- over the course of an evening, in his apartment the memories flash by and he has a change of heart. He struggles in his mind to save the memories of Clementine from being deleted. The story filled with soul is only elevated by the performance. The characters are funny, sad, at times unpleasant yet mostly real. But this film is a winner because the message is clear. Beyond the painful realities of relationships, love will always find its way.

3) Before Sunrise (1995):-

There are romantic movies and there is Before Sunrise a warm, fuzzy, optimistic movie that is just flawless. The plot is minimalist and the story is about Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American and Celine (Julie Delphy) a young French women, who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night together. In a nutshell, it is the often seen boy meet girl plot but appearances are deceiving as director Richard Linklater proves that there is more to date night than two strangers meeting in a strange city, making love and some hours later kissing Auf Wiedersehen. And that there is more to romance than mere hormones that there is brains and the promise of an ever-lingering love.

Cynical Jesse persuades Celine to spend few hours in Vienna with him. "If I turn out to be a psycho, you can bail out," he says. Celine agrees but only on one condition, that it better not be "some male fantasy – meet a French girl on a train, fuck her, never see her again and have a great story to tell." And yet, love sneaks up on Celine and Jesse as the film grows on you. The two talk about art, poetry, family, sex, God, death and dreams, this little love story becomes a mesmerising one-night microcosm of a lifetime relationship.

4) Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (1985):-

SJP might be a fashion icon now and her alter ego Carrie Bardshaw the most fashionable friend of them all. But little did we know that this where it all began. She is Janey Glenn, a love lorn high school girl, dressed in pink tights and bedazzled tops, dreaming of becoming a Dance TV regular.

Everything is all well with her BFF Layne (pre Mad About You Helen Hunt) who shares her passion for dancing and supports her wholeheartedly. There is a bad boy and a disapproving father who makes this journey exciting enough for any weather.

5) The Big Lebowski (1998):-

The plot of this crime-comedy caper from Coen Brothers pivots around "Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) who is mistaken for a millionaire Lebowski. Dude enjoys a groovy, laid-back Los Angeles lifestyle. His job comprises hanging with his bowling buddies, pompous security-store owner Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) and mild-mannered ex-surfer Donny (Steve Buscemi).

However, all hell breaks loose when one afternoon two goons break into his, bungalow, rough him up, and urinate on his living room rug. Why? Because Jackie Treehorn (Ben Gazzara) is owed money by the wife of a certain Jeff Lebowski. However, the goons grabbed the wrong Lebowski and the Dude has to seek retribution for his carpet and some answers.
