Where's the Best Middle Eastern Restaurant in Sydney?

Middle-Eastern cuisine is rich and diverse. The common spices found in Middle Eastern cuisine include turmeric, cumin, cloves, cinnamon, peppercorns and allspice. Other key ingredients include mint, barley, pistachios, figs, pomegranates, dates and rosewater. Savoury dips such as Tahini, Baba ghanoush and Hummus also play an important role in Middle Eastern cuisine. Common dishes include Kibbeh , which is similar to a croquette, Shawarma , which is similar to a wrap, Falafel is a popular fried snack and Ful medames is regarded as a staple meal. In regards to sweets and desserts, Baklava is popular, as is Turkish delight .



In Sydney there many Middle Eastern cafes and restaurants. Some of the highlights include the popular El Jannah in Granville, which is known for great charcoal chicken and a very tasty garlic sauce. Cafe Mint in Surry Hills is also top notch for Middle Eastern fare. The menu includes inspired dishes such as Za'alook, Muhammara, Za'atar Pita Chips, Chicken Kefte Balls, Saffron and Lemon Chicken or Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder with a side of Fattoush Salad, Saffron Rice Pilaf or Steamed Couscous. The dessert menu includes a Sweet Meze Plate featuring Turkish Delight, Syrian Nougat, Baklava, Medjool Dates, Walnuts, Dried Apricots and Rose Custard.

Safi Middle Eastern Dining in North Sydney is also a popular spot for classic Middle Eastern dishes. All the favourites can be found here; Shish Taouk (marinated chicken breast fillet), Kibbeh, Ma-aneh (grilled Lebanese sausage), Moujaddarra (lentil and rice pilaf) and many more. Desserts and sweets include Baklava, Ghourabia (shortbread) and Turkish delight.



There is also Almustafa in Glebe. The menu here has all the classic Middle Eastern flavours in the form of Kafta (kofta), Baked Kebeh (lamb with pine nuts and onions), Shawarma (chicken or lamb wraps), Samke Harra (spiced fish), Fasolia (Greek style beans), Cousa (stuffed zucchini), Lamb or Chicken Mansaf and even Mulukhiyah , if it is in season.

Embers Mezze Bar in Darlinghurst is also quite popular. The menu features Labne balls in thyme and chilli oil, 'Chiche Taouk' style chicken, Lamb and pinenut sambusek, Lamb dumplings, Tahini and date brulee and Rosewater marshmallow.

One final contender, before we hand this discussion over to you, is Almond Bar in Darlinghurst, A great tapas location, the Middle Eastern menu features various 'feast' options, including a 'Meat Feast,' which includes, three dips, Sumbusic Lamb Skewers, Chicken Skewers, Shawarma and Shanklish, Fried Cauliflower, Coriander Potatoes and Fattoush. The 'Seafood Feast' is an equally attractive option with three dips, Fried Cauliflower, Calamari, Samki harra, Sardines, Za'atar Prawns, Mukloubi with Chicken and Tabouli.

The desserts and sweets at Almond Bar are also delightful; choose from traditional Booza , Rosewater ice cream, Almond pancakes, Atayef (stuffed pancake) and of course, Baklava.
