The humble meat pie is a great equaliser. From beer-gutted truckies to high powered corporate types, we all enjoy sampling that perfect combination of pastry, meat and gravy. And we all have our personal favourite.
Here's my two nominations for the best meat pie in Brisbane. Hope it provokes plenty of lively debate amongst all of you pie aficionados.

Chunky Beef heaven at The Jolly Swagman
1. The Jolly Swagman
This Rochedale café is a long standing local institution. Located on the corner of Rochedale Rd and Miles Platting Rd, it is a mecca for pie loving southsiders, especially hungry tradies getting their lunch time fix.
The pie of choice here is definitely the chunky beef (with or without potato). Succulent chunks of beef and flavoursome gravy is encapsulated within sesame seed topped pastry prepared to optimal crispiness. Simple, but devastatingly effective. If you're attacking this beauty with your bare hands, be prepared for some overflow from the generous serving size. Definitely a knife and fork job if convenient.

Dine in or take away
The Jolly Swagman offers inside and alfresco dining or takeaway and has range of other delicious menu options. The sausage roll and gourmet hot dog are other standouts and the coffee is pretty good too.
2. PiefectionPrefer a slightly more gourmet option? Check out Chef Matt Roman's creations at one of two Piefection locales; 1373 Logan Rd, Mt Gravatt Central or 11 Clarence St, Coorparoo.

Piefection at Mt Gravatt
Debate rages about the premier pie here but I'm a bit of a traditionalist and can't go past the Guinness Beef and Mushroom. It's chock full of flavour and tenderness and will make you wonder why you ever wasted your time with second rate service station pie offerings. This one comes highly recommended after a big night out – an awesome hangover cure.

Guinness Beef and Mushroom goodness
The Jack Daniels Pork Rib Pie is also top notch and combines perfectly with outstanding chilli cheese fries. Check out the full menu at
