The humble meat pie is a great equaliser. From beer-gutted truckies to high powered corporate types, we all enjoy sampling that perfect combination of pastry, meat and gravy. And we all have our personal favourite.
Here's my two nominations for the best meat pie in Brisbane. Hope it provokes plenty of lively debate amongst all of you pie aficionados.
This Rochedale café is a long standing local institution. Located on the corner of Rochedale Rd and Miles Platting Rd, it is a mecca for pie loving southsiders, especially hungry tradies getting their lunch time fix.
The pie of choice here is definitely the chunky beef (with or without potato). Succulent chunks of beef and flavoursome gravy is encapsulated within sesame seed topped pastry prepared to optimal crispiness. Simple, but devastatingly effective. If you're attacking this beauty with your bare hands, be prepared for some overflow from the generous serving size. Definitely a knife and fork job if convenient.
The Jolly Swagman offers inside and alfresco dining or takeaway and has range of other delicious menu options. The sausage roll and gourmet hot dog are other standouts and the coffee is pretty good too.
Debate rages about the premier pie here but I'm a bit of a traditionalist and can't go past the Guinness Beef and Mushroom. It's chock full of flavour and tenderness and will make you wonder why you ever wasted your time with second rate service station pie offerings. This one comes highly recommended after a big night out – an awesome hangover cure.
The Jack Daniels Pork Rib Pie is also top notch and combines perfectly with outstanding chilli cheese fries. Check out the full menu at www.piefection.com.au
Unleash your pie passion and get involved in this history defining debate. Northsiders, convince us southies why we should bother making the trip across the river. Together we can answer this age old question:
A small Vietnamese Bakery across the road from Woolworths - near the Post Office. Pies with Real Meat and great pastry. Their prices are really good also. They make a great cheap burger also. Lovely people who work long hours 7 days a week. The lady also has a happy smile on her face. Go there once and you will keep going back
Can I tell you I'm a bit of a pie lover!! The best pies I have found in and around the Brisbane's East and Bayside areas has been at the 'Magic Oven' 3/ 128 Edith St, Wynnum. They have a great balance of fill, flavour and pastry texture!!
Gisler Bakery in Cleveland is a must try for the best pie. I stop at the pie van on Mt. Gravatt Capalaba Road Chandler (near Tilley Rd. roundabout) Stop when you have time. Not a travel pie. Sit at their tables and chairs and enjoy with knife and fork supplied
