One of Thailand's most favourite desserts is sticky rice with mango and sweet milk. Freshly cut beautifully sweet mango with the great texture of sticky rice and then the added milk make this a healthy but delicious snack at any time actually.
The north of Thailand is particularly known for its sticky rice and Chiang Mai has a reputation for some of the best mango sticky rice around. When my friend Duang, the chef from Brown Rice/Organic Bistro, pointed out an incongruous little green shop on the street and told me "They have the best Mango sticky rice in Thailand" I was intrigued. It's the way they cut the mango apparently - only there and another place in Bangkok does it like that..
So I went the next day and checked it out. They slice the mango in the hand - peeling and slicing in about 5 swift movements - impressive. I'm not sure why this makes the mango taste better but I have to say it was totally delicious.
It may be a little tricky to find but it's worth the search. Walk along Ratwithi road away from the moat, past the U.N. Irish Pub, On the Road Books and the intersection with Zoe's on the corner and go straight across. It's on the left hand side before you get to the school on the opposite side of the road. Enjoy!
Ian, I will be in Chaingmai next week and I would love to try the mango sticky rice along the Ratwithi road, just opposite the school. Do you have the phone number of the stall? Would like to call up if I am lost.
