I recall buying my Mother a Guerlain, gold encased lipstick for her birthday, it was creamy, rich, and promised a plumped up mouth. I believed it because the lipstick was presented in a luxurious golden Guerlain package. Unfortunately after about five minutes she complained of a sting in her lips, and it turned out she'd had a reaction to the 'plumping effect' in the lipstick. Oh the lure of packaging.
Since that catastrophe I have sought and found the best lipsticks on the market, for each budget.
Dior - We all lusted after Dior lipsticks and lipglosses when my sisters and I were in our teens. When we all received a Dior Addict lipstick as a special treat, I recall being delighted at how 'wearable' the shade was.
As an adult I still wear the same shade, Dior is me not only because of the quality of the lipstick and its staying power, but the translucency of the shade that makes it a favourite I'll always come back to.
Yves Saint Laurent – YSL is the best lipstick out there. The stick of lip colour itself never breaks, unlike many lipsticks I've tried, and the moisture in the lipstick never fails. Even if you try a matt lip (which can be drying), YSL lipsticks are always super slick; they glide on and stay put.
They keep your lips looking plumped and kissable and don't 'run'. They also have the best staying power out of many luxurious brands. With YSL you really get what you pay for, even if they are pricier than the high-street options, unlike L'Oreal, they're worth it.
Illamasqua – These are a relatively new brand, that came onto the beauty scene with aplomb and have a cult following because of their fearless and explosive beauty campaigns. The products are brilliant too. The lipsticks have great staying power - I recently wore the (pictured) Sangers blood red lip and didn't need to reapply for about four hours.
Cheaper options that plump your pout:
Rimmel – Rimmel is the only high-street brand of lipstick that packs a punch; it moisturises, plumps, and colours your pout to perfection. The Lasting Finish range of highly-pigmented crayon colours are excellent because not only are they bang on trend, they truly last and you're not constantly re-applying every time you take a sip of your drink.
Make those lips kissable and invest in a lippy that will make others want to pucker up/bag what you have.
