There's a lot to love about live music. You love to feel it beating loudly as the bass rattles through your core. It's your favourite bands in three dimensions. You can drink to it, dance like a maniac to it, and share the experience in good company.

Perth has a healthy local music scene although we like to bemoan the fact we too often miss out on touring acts. Whether it's because we are too isolated or don't have the gig-going populace to make it worth the trek, it's not all negative. There's no lack of worthy venues to house the music-makers that perform for us. Perth's venues have room for any genre and there is enough variation for anyone to find a favourite.

For a start, Fremantle has its own cacophony of venues. Most notably the not-for-profit Fly by Night Musicians Club where many of the state's claims-to-fame have graced the stage. You'll also find the Norfolk Basement Lounge and The Metropolis in Freo. Heading into North Fremantle, Mojo's Bar covers all colours of the music spectrum and has live music almost every night of the year.

In the city, we've got the Amplifier/Capitol duo. Fingerprinting on entry may seem dubious but possibly a sign of the times. Capitol gets good bands and regularly fills to capacity. Down the lane, Amplifier bar is a worthy watering-hole alone. The stage and bar are set in close-quarters, getting you up close and personal with the band.

A relative new player in the scene, The Bird is a small bar nestled in Northbridge. Its unassuming fit-out achieves maximum effect and real appeal amongst apathetic audiophiles. At the other end of the gamut, nearby Metro City is big and unashamed. It has lots of bars, lots of people, and the place pulsates when the music pumps. If you can overlook forgone character and fortress-like security, pick your event selectively and it's worth a visit. Just behind Metro City, The Bakery serves up the freshest sounds in the city. Besides being not-for-profit and charitably run, the small container-yard setup is unique and is conducive to the mostly fringe bands they bring in.

North Perth's Rosemount Hotel is a favourite with good reason. It regularly draws in stellar acts from around the country and rest of the world. The small stage puts out a big sound, so expect it to be loud. The Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley is also a prime player in the music stage scene.

On a different angle, the Ellington Jazz Club brings us exemplary examples of the large and likeable genre. With table seating and a dinner menu, it's worth booking in advance. Similarly, the in-house band at the underground Jazz Cellar routinely belts out their best in a one-of-a–kind setting.

Away from the city and out in the open air, The Quarry offers a picnic night out in natural ambience. In and around the Swan Valley, there is the Belvoir Amphitheatre , Sandalford Winery and Red Hill Auditorium .
