It was a sad day for music lovers in Brisbane when Festival Hall was shut down. But that was not the day the music died; as you'll see here, Brisbane still has several quality venues that promote live music. So which is the best?
If any venue in town can be called the new Festival Hall, it's got to be The Tivoli. This one is my personal favourite. Sure, it has its flaws, but all that is forgotten when I see that art deco interior. The Tivoli is spacious, has good acoustics, and consistently offers a mixed line up of indie, country, popular, quirky and everything in between.
I recently saw a decent set at Alhambra Lounge, a 'boutique nightclub' in the Valley. This venue ticks all the boxes – grungy, industrial interior design, small enough to be intimate but large enough that you don't feel claustrophobic, and a good mix of acts (including a pre Laneway party by Bleeding Knees Club, my favourite Triple J Unearthed artist) – and while it shows promise, it might be too early to start raving just yet.
I've never been gigging at the Step Inn myself, but my hip hop loving friends inform me that it's starting to replace The Zoo as the premier hip hop gig.
Over to you guys now – which venues do you love, and why?
