Did you know the humble Kitchener Bun has its own Facebook page?

If you've just arrived in this fair state, what is the Kitchener Bun ? - well it's based on the German jam bun called a berliner.

Let's face it, it's more than a donnut without a hole, it's more than a bun smothered in jam and cream, and it just doesn't taste the same anywhere else. Let the rest of Australia swoon for vegemite, but for Crow Eaters it is secondary to the ol' Lord Kitchener.

JFK famously said on his trip famous trip to West Germany in 1963, " Ich bin ein berliner " (I am a jam bun). So we South Australians can say, "We are Kitchener buns," or at least our ample thighs are.

So where is the best Kitchener Bun in SA? Here's my short list:
O'Connell Bakery (44 O'Connell St North Adelaide)
Caster sugar coating, sturdy bun and jam on the top
Balfours
The most commercially produce but still sticky and wicked and not too heavy.
Widely available in supermarkets and convenience stores.
• Kipling's Bakery (Port Wakefield)
Double the wicked, these are 'man-buns' made for truckers' and farmers'.
• Port Elliot Bakery (Port Elliot)
Caster sugar crusted Kitchener buns- little bit posh.
• The Ardrossan Bakery (Adrossan)
These guys featured on ABC news recently for the sweet. Yorke Peninsula knows its cake and dough, and this is the secret here.
