A unique suburb showcases hidden gems and local knowledge
Annerley is my hood and I love all the wonderful hidden places I've found over the five years I've lived here. There are so many amazing places to visit but some of them you will have to put your explorer's vest on and go for an adventure.
In Annerley Arcade, down the stairs and out the back is a very unassuming door. It's the entrance to Fishchick Aquatics which has one of Brisbane's largest range of aquarium and fish accessories along with a simply staggering amount of fish for purchase.
This funky little cafe set on the corner of Waterton Street is a tiny cafe with a warm-hearted barista called Patrick. He makes a beautiful smooth coffee and is more than happy to cater to those who like a 'bucket' for their morning pick-me-up.
Here's a spot that is all but hidden and you could easily walk past without even noticing it's existence. However, if you happen to stumble upon Fats Comics in Annerley Junction, then you are in for a treat. Boxes upon boxes of vintage comics from Batman to Phantom are stacked under tables, against walls and in front of the counter just waiting for the patient collector to find them.
Step into a time machine as you walk through the doors of Brandon's Shoe Repairs in Annerley Junction and into the fancy free 1960's. Third generation cobbler Trevor Brandon or his wife Frances will take your favourite boots, heels or sneakers as you stand at the front desk that has seen thousands of shoes before yours.
Tucked back away from the hustle and bustle of Ipswich Road, in the Peter Baker Finch centre, you will find a large outdoor cafe called Bennies. It's owner, Taylor, is a twenty-something entrepreneur who treats your pets like clientele and serves every customer with a warm and graceful energy which you can't help but love.
While this lovely store doesn't quite fall into Annerley, it's so close by and is a well-kept secret amongst locals. Whether you're looking for something special for yourself or a gift for someone else, this is the perfect store with quality items that you'll think were picked out just for you. The friendly owners will help you with any curly requests and will always try to find the perfect thing for you.
Imagine a little place in the middle of a bustling shopping strip where you can sit on a comfy couch and read a good book. Nobody will bother you but you can choose to chat to other people who are seeking a little bit of solace away from the traffic and hub-bub of Ipswich Road. There are books for you to purchase and you're even invited to bring the kids to play in the children's reading corner. Doesn't that sound nice? That's exactly how it is at the Annerley Community Bookshop.
Down the iconic Annerley Arcade is a little shop called Betty's. It's small, I mean tiny, but it's full to bursting with vintage, retro and hand picked second-hand goodness. You will spend hours when you thought you only had minutes to spare as you will want to turn over every item, look through each dresser and try on every piece of wonderful that is in the store.
You wouldn't believe me if I told you that Annerley in Brisbane's South has not one but two awesome comic book stores. But there totally is. Fats is a great little second hand and vintage comic book store up on the strip but Ace Comics is a little harder to find and you might need to ask a few people on your way to make sure you're on the right track. It's a comic book treasure trove.
Nestled at one end of historic Annerley Junction is a handmade marketplace open 6 days a week. No longer do you have to wander aimlessly through the multitudes of stalls at your local markets trying to find 'the perfect thing'. The store owner at Handmade High Street has cherry-picked all the best stuff for you to ogle, covet and purchase for your loved ones (or yourself).
Offering a fine dining, modern Australian foodies experience, this little house on Ekibin Road in the backstreets of Annerley has been serving happy locals for 10 years this month. The menu changes seasonally so you won't be satisfied with just one visit. You'll want to visit regularly to try more from the menu and to sample new meals which are regularly added.
