So far, my family has only discovered four Japanese eating places at Rundle Mall. Katsumoto Restaurant was our first discovery and is still our favourite. When we dine there as a family, we would always order the Tonkatsu, Yakitori, Chicken Teriyaki and Nasu Dengaku (Deep Fried Eggplant with Sweet Miso Sauce) sets. Their Nasu Dengaku is still the best that we have tasted in Adelaide.
We spotted Maki Maki at Parc Arcade, Gawler Place when we used to park our car at the Gawler Place car park. Otherwise we would never have known that there is a café there. Each member of my family seems to have their own favourite dish at this stall. My favourite dish is their Karaage Chicken Curry Rice and my father likes their Teriyaki Chicken Rice. My mother and sister claim that their Udon is the best in Adelaide. They usually order the Karaage Chicken Udon although there is a Tempura Udon option.
We visited Ajisen Ramen Japanese Restaurant at Leigh Street but there is a branch located at 35 Regent Arcade too. They are best known for their selection of ramen, which uses a soup base from which the restaurant gets its name from. Ajisen Ramen also serves the Karaage Chicken we currently consider to be the closest to the one we enjoyed in Hokkaido, Japan.
Aka Japanese Cuisine is our latest discovery. It's located in the newly renovated David Jones' Food Court. They serve a good range of Donburi dishes (a Japanese dish in which various toppings is served with rice) as well as some of Japan's "street food" such as Okonomiyaki and Taiyaki.
