Rock climbing is the extreme sport that transforms hikes and bushwalks into adventures. The exhilaration when you reach the peak of one of Sydney's sheer cliffs, inhaling crisp, clear air and admiring a spectacular view into the horizon, is something everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime.

Before you tackle the towering cliffs at the Blue Mountains, Royal National Park or Queens Park, try this exciting sport in a safe, indoor environment within Sydney. You'll learn the basics from experts, share the experience with friends (or someone you trust to hold your rope) and conquer a giant indoor wall.

Choose from one of these centres, located throughout Sydney:

St Leonards – Climb Fit
A short walk from the train station, you'll be an expert once you complete the 200 climbing routes in this giant centre. The walls feature boulders, ledges, cracks, overhangs, ladders and obstacles to test your problem-solving skills. The centre also has a gym to improve your strength, stamina and flexibility between climbs. There are lessons and coaching available for beginners and children. Prices start at $26 (including harness and shoes). The walls are open till late, 7 days a week.

Visit the centre at Unit 4/12 Frederick St, St Leonards or call on (02) 9436 4600.

Castle Hill - The Edge
Compete for bragging rights on the towering walls at The Edge, testing yourself on over 120 climbs to try reaching the 18-metre summit. Try the vertical logs, bouldering or abseiling. If you're keeping score, the wall grading ranges from 5 to 29 (38 is considered the most difficult, reserved for the most complex outdoor climbs). There are workshop and party options and prices start at $31 (including harness and shoes). There is a great $9 deal on Wednesdays and discounts for monthly memberships and multi-pass visits. The walls are open till 10pm on weekdays and 6pm on weekends.

Visit the centre at 9/10 Hudson Ave, Castle Hill or call on (02) 9899 8228.

St Peters and Villawood – Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym
Satisfying indoor rock climbers since 1993, the Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym has hosted world championship events on walls up to 16 metres high. With over 300 routes, some winding for 25 metres, climbers of all levels will find a challenge on the walls at St Peters and Villawood. If you're a first-timer, a guide will show you the ropes (literally) to begin your climbing. There are courses and group bookings available. The centre also hosts a rock climbing course at the Sydney Community College. Prices start at $28 (including harness and shoes) with discounts if you're using a multi-visit pass or membership. The centres are open till late 7 days a week.
Visit the St Peters Centre at 4C/1-7 Unwins Bridge Rd, St Peters or call on (02) 9519 3325.

Visit the Villawood Centre at Unit 5 850 Woodville Road, Villawood or call on (02) 9728 2825.

Blacktown – Climb Oz
As rock climbers bid to include the sport in the 2020 Olympic Games, Climb Oz continues training them in Western Sydney. The centre's training sessions are recommended, provided by a coach with experience training Australia's elite in international events. They've helped dedicated climbers reach the elite level within only 3 years, including Mitchell Mullins, a 14-year-old competitor at the last Youth World Championship in Italy. For a stamina and strength test without ropes, try bouldering. If you're flying solo, use the auto-belayer, a mechanical system to aid a safe climb. The centre is open till 9.30pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends. Prices start at $23 (including harness and shoes) with discounts if you're bouldering, using a multi-visit pass or membership.

Alexandria – 9 Degrees
Indoor rock climbing has become a popular alternative to the gym as a convenient, challenging and dynamic workout in any weather. 9 Degrees focuses on the latest iteration of the sport – bouldering. Without ropes, you can immediately challenge yourself, clinging tightly with your hands, feet, stomach, chin or forehead to best the 4.5-metre walls. It's the ideal climbing experience if heights make your knees tremble. The centre is open till 10pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends. Prices start at $19.80 with special 9% discounts and multi-visit and 3, 6, and 12 month memberships for more savings.
