There are still a number of people in Melbourne who enjoy purchasing CDs and records. Yes, that is correct - purchasing music.

In fact this year, British band Radiohead asked their worldwide fanbase to wake up early on Monday March 28th, 2011 and visit selected independent record stores, not to purchase music, but to receive a free newspaper entitled The Universal Sigh. Yes that is right; Radiohead managed to remind their fans of two dying breeds; the local independent music store and the daily newspaper, whilst promoting their latest release, The King of Limbs. Talk about multi-tasking.

Back to the independent music stores, if you are a Radiohead fan and you were in Melbourne that autumn day, you probably queued outside Polyester Records on Flinders Lane, and had your picture taken with your Radiohead memorabilia.

Polyester Records is perhaps one of Melbourne's best independent music stores and while they also have an online store, nothing beats browsing in-store. Another top pick is Missing Link on Bourke Street, they also have an online ebay store. Northside Records are also still going, they are located Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.

If you know of a great independent record store, please let us know about it by listing it below.

We look forward to your suggestions.
