It was one hot day that I decided, as a service to my fellow Sydney-siders I would investigate the best ice cream places on the northern beaches. It was a tough assignment … so many flavours, so many ice cream shops and only 24 hours in the day. Not surprisingly, most of the ice creameries were located in Manly, tourist mecca of the north side.

Cold Rock
4/10 Darley Road, Manly

Situated in the heart of Manly, Cold Rock takes ice cream indulgence to the next level. If you are not familiar with Cold Rock, their motto is choose it, mix, it, smash it, love it. Choose your favourite ice cream, then mix it with your choice of lollies, chocolates, fruit and nuts. Then the staff smash your mix-ins into your ice cream. Simply delicious.

Favourite Flavours: Cookies and Cream Ice Cream with Snickers and Chocolate Fudge, Bubblegum ice cream with gummy bears and M&Ms

Chill Bar
20 The Strand, Dee Why

Located across the road from Dee Why Beach, Chill Bar has some seriously delicious gelatos. You can sit and enjoy your ice cream on the premises or cross the road and eat it on the promenade or on the beach.

Favourite Flavours: Snickers, Quella

Ben & Jerry's
Shop 5, 25 South Steyne, Manly

The first time I tried Ben & Jerry's was while visiting New York a few years ago. And OMG what a "When Harry Met Sally" moment that was. I didn't know which flavour to choose so I went by the name and Chunky Monkey caught my attention. Yummm. I have since tried different flavours and while they are all so divine, I have one favourite - Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.

Favourite Flavours: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Triple Caramel Chunk

Movenpick
38 The Corso, Manly

Movenpick ice cream can best be described as sophisticated Swiss delight. Gourmet ice cream that is to die for. With 24 flavours to choose from, you won't know where to start – Crème Brulee, Tiramisu, Maple Walnut, Caramelita, Pistachio and sorbets including Lemon & Lime, Passionfruit & Mango to name just a few.

Favourite Flavours: Crème Brulee, Tiramisu

Royal Copenhagen
106 The Corso, Manly

A family favourite Royal Copenhagen's ice cream and ice cream cones always taste fresh. Great selection of flavours including Jaffa Orange, White Chocolate, Macadamia, Milo, Pralines & Cream, Rum and Raisin, Coconut Ice and sorbets such as Kiwifruit, Pineapple and Raspberry. I have to admit, my weakness is the fresh cream on top. You can also add your own nuts and sprinkles after you get your ice cream.

Favourite Flavours: Pralines & Cream, Rum & Raisin

Gelatissimo
Kiosk 2, Manly Wharf, East Esplanade, Manly

When it comes to gelato, it doesn't get much better than this. Located right in the middle of Manly Wharf, with all the chaos, this ice cream shop stands its own ground. Selection of flavours is incredible, the taste of the gelato is out of this world and the presentation of the ice creams is in a class of its own. Choose from ice cream cones, baby cones, super sundaes and gelato cakes for the ultimate ice cream experience. Flavours include Belgian Chocolate, Italian Cookies and Cream, Blood Orange, Caramelised Fig, Coconut, Panacotta, Roasted Almond, Tiramisu and many more

Favourite Flavours: Hazelnut, Italian Cookies and Cream

So where is the best ice cream on the northern beaches? My vote definitely goes to Gelatissimo.
