After a lengthy and thorough search of Melbourne's richest, most decadent hot chocolate experience the field has been dwindled down to five. Pit your taste buds against the five contenders to discover Melbourne's finest hot chocolate for yourself.

Cherryripe Hot Chocolate
Castro's Kiosk, Melbourne University
Tucked away under the physics building, the intense cherry chocolate experience at Castro's has been getting physics students through their Friday afternoon labs for years. Super sweet, super chocolatey and super charged - possibly something to do with the nearby radiation samples? A must for cold wintery mornings.

Deep Strength D'Amore
Coco Loco, Northcote
You know you're in for a treat when you order your hot chocolate by intensity. The D'Amore is a Lemon Myrtle infused dark chocolate explosion that is not only vegan and sustainably sourced but exquisitely presented and perfectly satisfying.

Max's Suckao
Max Brenner
Innovative and intense, the Suckao is a unique tool for preparation of chocolate shot. The 'Suck' refers to the drawing of the thick preparation through a metal straw, while the 'Kakao' is the Spanish word for cocoa beans. This experience is almost ritualistic as you choose your chocolate bits to melt over a candle in warm frothy milk. Just try not to eat too much of the chocolate before you start stirring!

Dark Beligan Chocolate Mocha
While mocha isn't hot chocolate in the purest sense, Theobroma's Mocha certainly deserves a mention. Also served in a flamed warmer, the coffee in no way detracts from the purity of the melted chocolate. Chocolate of the finest quality that remains lingering at the bottom of your cup waiting for a sneaky finger while your companion looks the other way.

Chef's Blend Hot Chocolate
Flavoured with nutmeg, cinnamon and lemon zest, the Chef's blend at Shocolate is a spicy European style hot chocolate - lighter than the others, but that's ok because you'll want to leave room for all scrumptious treats that beckon from counter.
