My friend is an absolute gym nut, and he wants to know where the best gym in Brisbane is, so he can keep up with his workout regime while he's there. It doesn't matter if it's franchise gyms, or independently owned, 24-hours, or not; we just want to find the best and most affordable one.
This is what our research has come up with so far:
Jetts is 24-hour franchise you can find in various locations around Brisbane. There are no lock-in contracts, and there are casual and holiday passes available for those who aren't staying long in the area. Membership even extends across all of Australia and New Zealand!
I guess the appeal of this club is that it really is completely accessible to its members. You get to pick and choose which times you get to work out, so you won't get stuck waiting around for the machines you want to free up because they're always occupied. Canstar Blue voted it the best for Customer Satisfaction, two years in a row (2012 - 2013).
Reviews of the franchise have been largely positive, with good customer service, excellent equipment, and affordable prices, at $13.95 per week — after the initial club access fee, of course. But that gets you into any Jetts club around Australia and New Zealand, so it's probably worth it in the long run.
Fitness First is a national franchise that boasts convenience as its ultimate advantage. There are franchisees everywhere.
With Fitness First, even in other parts of Australia, there's not really much of an "intimidating" gym culture. You see people of all ages, and fitness levels going in and doing their own thing without worrying about what other people are doing. It's great, because I'm personally the type who gets incredibly self-conscious when exercising and I don't like doing it in public — this kind of culture is reassuring and comfortable.
The best review I've found is for the one on Elizabeth Street, in Brisbane CBD. It has four storeys of equipment and facilities, and you can sign up with a contract membership, or purchase a prepaid pass in packs of 5, 10, 25, or 50.

Anytime Fitness is a similar endeavour, it not only has gyms everywhere, they also operate around the clock, for extra convenience.
This franchise comes with all the usual equipment, personal trainers, and affordable prices, but it also has online tools and support, including a workout planner, diet tracker, and virtual coaching for you to access at home. Even if you're not working out, you can ensure you maintain a healthy lifestyle at home.
Because this gym is so flexible, it would probably be worth it to try out its equipment and facilities first, especially as a newbie, and then work out what you're really looking for in a gym, so you'll know when making up your mind.
West end health works or Stafford gym, opposite Bunnings. Proper gyms with quality equipment not the cheap crap you get in the franchise gym. This article is poor and no research has gone into it. What is the criteria? I do global gym reviews the ones mentioned don't even come close
If you’re looking for the best gym in West End that offers the best personal training options out there today, then visit Dundee’s Boxing & Fitness. they’ve got the credentials and the experience necessary to help you make your workouts everything they should be.
