Anyone who enjoys a plate of hot, steaming vegetables or a bowl of sweet, delicious, summer fruits will understand, that with variations in both the quality and availability of fresh produce, it's good to shop around.
The question is, where are the ultimate places in Melbourne to visit if you're going to give yourself the best chance of finding these treats for your table before other customers get to them?
The more obvious suggestions are locations like The
Prahran Market , the
South Melbourne Market or the good ol'
Queen Victoria Market , but some people find the competitive bustle confusing and don't like all the yelling from the vendors.
Some will suggest local greengrocers like
Gangemi's in Brunswick and
Toscano's in Richmond.
LaManna Fresh on Sydney Road or Essendon's
Fruitique are also excellent choices.
Of course, there are always weekend markets like the CERES Environment Park
Organic Produce Market , 9:00am until 2:00pm, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays or the
Preston Farmer's Market , held on the fourth Saturday of every month.
However, many are now shunning the stores altogether and using the
Aussie Farmers Direct home delivery service, who will put together a 'Pick n' Pack' selection for you and bring it straight to your door.
There's is also the option of growing your own, with plenty of garden centres like
Bulleen Art and Garden ,
Vasili's Garden or the team at
CERES to show you how. They might even educate you about the
recent controversy surrounding Australian fruit fussiness.
So, how do you tell if a rock melon is ripe? Any hints for making sure the bag of shiny red apples you've purchased aren't actually powdery or rotten on the inside? Where do you stand on the all important fruit and vegetable issue; grape tasting, part of shopping or blatant theft?
Where do you buy your fruit and veg? Do you look for quality, flavour, low prices, variety or service with a smile?
Please leave a comment - we look forward to your feedback.
