School holidays don't have to be expensive
Any parent of school aged children can tell you that school holidays aren't cheap. September school holidays sees the weather in Melbourne getting better, so staying inside all the time with kids simply isn't an option for most.
It doesn't have to be expensive though, with these free school holiday activities sure to keep your kids entertained.
Outside of Gate 3 of the MCG, you will find a plethora of activities for your footy obsessed little fans. With appearances from footy players over all four days and games at the AFL Live Site (and gold coin coffees thanks to McCafe!), there is something for every footy fan, big or small.
A hands-on craft experience set in nature, suitable for children from as young as 2 years old all the way to 12. The Cranbourne location of the Royal Botanic Gardens is already a great free day out for families, so once you're done getting crafty, have a wander of the spectacular grounds and let little ones explore. Pack a picnic and enjoy the scenery!
The City of Greater Dandenong welcomes all families to join in on what is sure to be a spectacular day for families. Only a short walk from the Noble Park train station, the Noble Park Ross Reserve is home to live entertainment, carnival rides, kids activities, and even try your hand at a camel ride if you're brave!
The annual Mini Carnival at Cranbourne Homemakers Centre is back and set to be bigger than ever! Situated just out the front of the Officeworks in the Cranbourne Homemakers Centre, an animal farm, face painting, fairy floss, a market stall, rides, giveaways and more will keep the whole family entertained.

Another fantastic day out for children at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne is the Holidays In The Kids Backyard program. Lots of hands-on sensory activities for children of all ages, including weaving, clay construction and storytelling.
Another shopping centre offering a great activity for free these school holidays. Head down to the Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre, and here you will have your chance to meet Dirt Girl of Dirt Girl World. Kids can also decorate their own pot and plant their own herbs to take home!
Have a Fireman Sam obsessed little one? Here they can come to a real working Fire Station and meet the force. A jumping castle, fire safety presentations, tours of the new fire station and more will be available for a fun firefighter-filled day out.
The Wiggles Wiggletime, Federation Square, Melbourne
If you have any smaller children this is the perfect event to join in on these school holidays. Everyone's favourite wiggly children's band is on the big screen at Fed Square with their Nursery Rhymes and more playing every day of school holidays at 10am. Make a day out of it and enjoy the other free activities Fed Square has to offer, or pop over to the playground behind the Square next to the Yarra.
