January may be long and hot but it doesn't need to be expensive. Here are some of the best free events taking place in Perth this month.

Fireworks at the New Year's Day Concert

New Years Day Beach Party and Fireworks
Have you recovered from New Year's Eve yet? Time to get your dancing shoes back on with a New Year's Day community concert with live music and entertainment, kids' activities and the first fireworks of the year.

Do you love reading and sharing books? Join a book exchange with a difference with the social experiment: 'Bookstops'. Pick up a free book at a selection of bus stops located within the City of South Perth, and once you have finished, either return the book or donate a new one!

Swim and Survive

Free Swim and Survive on the Swan this Summer
The Royal Life Saving Society is providing adults and children who have reached stage 10 and above the opportunity to learn lifesaving skills, first aid and CPR. Offered at two riverside locations in Bayswater and South Perth, participants of the program will learn river rescues and how to prevent drowning deaths in inland waterways. Participants over the age of 14 are also eligible to obtain their Bronze Medallion in this program.

Mandurah Sundowner Concert
All are welcome to the Sundowner Concert Series, with a free concert on the beautiful Mandurah Marina. People are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket and head to the Reserve for an evening of tunes by the Moorditj Brothers and Johnny Law & the Pistol Packin' Daddies.

Little Creatures
Beer School at Little Creatures

Beer School @ Creatures Next Door
Head to Creatures Next Door (hint, it's next door to Little Creatures in Fremantle) for their monthly beer school, perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about the amber ale. It's free but you must book in advance, and Beer School students will learn about the ingredients and processes of beer making, and probably get to sample a drop or two.

Guildford Twilight Markets

Guildford Twilight Markets
The Stirling Square Twilight Markets will begin its short season in January, running on the second Friday of each month with a range of handcrafted and locally produced items, plus vintage and upcycled crafts and goods. There will also be a hawkers food market, live music and dancing. There is a playground for the kids and dogs are permitted on a leash.

Fringe is in town between January 20th and February 19th with an enormous line-up of mind-blowing events and shows. While most shows are ticketed events, here are a few free events and shows during January.
