Love Melbourne even more when the events are free
Melbourne is such an eclectic city and even better when free! Here's a list of the best free things to do in Melbourne in summer.

Has Christmas hit you a little too hard and now you're looking for some inexpensive outings that are still great fun in Melbourne?

To get the ball rolling, here are a few of my suggestions:
NGV for kids Get the kids out of the house and into something exciting over the summer holidays with the NGV kids summer festival.
From the 11th to the 19th of January - plenty of free activities, workshops and performances to keep them amused. Event Venue: NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. When: Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Click HERE for website and more info.

Chinese New Year at Crown this year is arriving early in January. On the 25th of January Crown will welcome in the year of the rat at the Crown Entertainment Complex. Transforming their Atrium into a glow-in-the-dark homage to the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals, there will be over 60 different lanterns and displays.
On the Riverwalk, there will be a Hawkers Bazaar from the 31st of January to the 2nd of February with free live music lion dancers and a fireworks display with over 30 different Asian food stalls. Event Venue: Crown Entertainment Complex, Riverwalk, Melbourne. When: The event runs from the 22nd of January to the 11th of February 2020.
The Summer Night Market
Wednesday nights are fun again as the Summer Night Market at Queen Victoria Market is back with free entertainment and a really vibrant illuminated night vibe.
This year, there will be a pop-up volleyball court, fresh drinks at pop-up bars along with international street food and quirky stores to browse.
Event venue is the Queen Victoria Market on the corner of Elizabeth and Victoria streets, Melbourne. When: Running from the 20th of November 2019 to the 11th of March 2020 on Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

From the 8th of December to the 23rd of February 2020, there will be a Family Market on the Riverside.
With local artists and stallholders selling handmade Artisan wares,along with face painting, henna and gifts.
Music will be played from 1 p.m. with a DJ.
Highlights include lawn games and their breakfast and brunch menu with cocktails, beer and wine.
Riverside summer purple patch, 39 Dukes Walk, South Wharf. When: Held every Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Federation square skyline terrace is being transformed into a Summertime social rooftop playground as a great pop-up backyard place to hang out with your friends and enjoy a drink over summer.
With custom built (bookable) lane games, including skittles and shuffleboard, there is a great community lawn and it's a really fun place to kick back and relax in the sunshine.
Food includes Woodfired Pizzas and an ice cream cart, along with picnic baskets for those that would prefer everything prepared for them.
On Sunday is the lawn place battles of the giant games with prizes and live music and on Saturdays for $49 there is a bottomless brunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
If the idea of luxury converted caravans are perfect for you to summertime party in, you will love Summertime Social. Event Venue: Located at Federation Square corner of Flinders and Swanston streets, Melbourne on the Skyline terrace. When:
Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. until late.
Open from January 2nd until the 5th of April 2020 with free entry (although you may like to book a caravan in advance).

The District Summer Slip and Slide
Bringing back memories of water fun with slip and slides, at the District Docklands, there will be a giant 25 m water slide offering to cool down the hottest day.
You can join in the garden games or just watch from picnic tables and there is also a water mist zone if you don't want to go on the slide.
Entry is free
