It's a long way to the sea from Toowoomba, nevertheless, travellers may find themselves with a hankering for good ol' fish and chips. Here's where you can angle for the catch of the day.

High Tide Northpoint

'There's plenty of fish in the sea, but ours come with chips', says High Tide Northpoint fish and chips. Dine in, al fresco or takeaway. Meals are delicious and fish is served with a lemon wedge. Extensive menu. Fish and chips from $14.50. Service is friendly. Brisk preparation and non-greasy meals. Don't let this one get away.

Metro Seafood

Metro Seafood, 'the healthier choice' is true and it's a popular gem. Service is prompt. Cooking time of five minutes for basic fish and chips. The garlic prawns are delectable and fish is fresh and tender. Salads and sauces are delicious. Ask for lemon wedges. Frying is in cholesterol-free oil. Good value for money. Dinner for One $10 (Hoki, chips, 1 calamari ring, 1 potato scallop, tartare), Family Meal Pack $39.90 (twice the Dinner for One). You can order online.

Central Seafood

In the heart of the city, Central Seafood has a wide range of fresh fish, prawns, oysters, crabs and more, plus market shopping and eat-in. Service is prompt. Fish from $6.90 to $13.50, cod, perch, snapper, barra.

Hook'd

Hook'd serves New Zealand hoki and chips for a mere $11. Add $1.50 for whiting. Barramundi or snapper are $6 extra. The seafood basket is satisfying for $16. Grilled barramundi or salmon with chips $22. Side dishes and sauces available, eg pineapple fritters with cinnamon. There's also chicken and burgers, but hoki is the big thing here and it's succulent. Hook'd is beside a park where you can dine at a picnic table. Picnic Point is only a few minutes drive away. Service is prompt. Online orders welcome.

The Fish Corner

The Fish Corner meals are non-greasy, wide variety of sauces, perfectly prepared calamari. Chips $4.80, NZ hoki $9, Barra and Perch $11, Snapper $11.50. Good presentation. Order online from Menulog.

Chipper Fish

Locally owned Chipper Fish will do crumbed, battered, grilled or herb grilled coral trout, barramundi, deep sea dory, Nile perch and blue grenadier with chips for around $13. Wide variety of value packs. Coconut prawns, salt and pepper squid and calamari are other tempters. Extensive variety of burgers. House-made sauces. Phone orders welcome.

Toowoomba Fish Depot

Toowoomba Fish Depot will do takeaway or delivery to your home or office or you can take a seat outside. Food is non-greasy. Tasty chips. Natural oysters. Fish and chips under $15. Burgers, sandwiches, rolls, snapper, sea perch, coral trout, mackerel and more.

Fresh Katch

Fresh Katch have freshwater fish fillet and chips for $10. Seafood basket $16 or $30 meal deal. Berny's on West

Meal deals are plentiful at Berny's on West. Hoki, barra and flathead, average $12.50 with chips/salad. Large number of sides including sweet potato fries, chicken garlic balls and corn jacks. Popular with friendly service.

Wyalla Fish Bar

The Wyalla Fish Bar serve a generously sized calamari and the crumbed oysters melt in your mouth. It's a popular fishing hole, but for my money, they could have drained the oil more. Extensive GF menu. Service is friendly and meals are ready quickly. Lemons are extra.

Out of Town - The Fishbone at Highfields

The Fishbone, Central Plaza shopping centre. At present, it's the only source of fish and chips in Highfields. Great variety and presentation, healthy choice, delicious salads. Fish is from $6.90 - $12 (snapper and barra).
