New to Canberra, I love exploring this city and the secrets that it holds with my family.
Published December 4th 2017
In years gone by, fish and chips weren't a specialty in Canberra, as many locals would wait until they went to Batemans Bay or the South Coast to enjoy this traditional takeaway. Fortunately this has changed over the years and in early December, 2017, a new fish and chip shop Catch opened on the popular Lonsdale Street in Braddon - as the owner Socrates Kochinos wanted to prove that Canberra could produce top quality fish and chips, right here in the city. As well as offering fish and chips, this retro, traditional-style takeaway also sells an interesting combination of chiko rolls, dim sims, alcohol and poke bowls (see here for details). Although Catch is an exciting new addition to Canberra's foodie scene, other fish and chip shops at Lake Burley Griffin and in the suburbs have become increasingly popular, especially in the summer months.

These are some that our family have discovered - if you have a favourite not mentioned, please leave a comment at the top of this article to share your locals secret...

Snapper on the Lake is located downstairs at the Southern Cross Yacht Club in Yarralumla. This personal family favourite offers the usual tasty fish and chip options, as well as beer and wine to enjoy with your meal. Sit outside in their shady dining area or take your meal to the edge of Lake Burley Griffin and relax on the grass. This venue is particularly popular on weekends, with live music often playing on Sunday afternoons. Although the fish and chips are delicious, it is also the views and general atmosphere of this laid-back location which make it such a success. See here for details. For a full article, see here.

Snapper in the Courtyard is Snappers second outlet, which also opened in early December, 2017. This casual eatery is located inside the Jamison Southern Cross Club in Macquarie and has the same menu as the Lake Burley Griffin location - as well as live music on Sunday afternoons, between 1pm and 5pm. See here for details.
