Takeaway fish and chips (by Mw12310 / BY-SA 3.0)

You can catch your own, but there's no shame in enjoying freshly fried or grilled fish and chips at your local takeaway. The best seafood shops are often family owned, providing the same friendly service, crispy chips and fresh fish from the Sydney Fish Market for long enough to become local institutions. Begin your search for the top fish and chips in Sydney with these top 5 choices.

Bondi Surf Seafoods - 128 Campbell Parade, Bondi - (02) 9130 4554
Although Bondi Beach's popularity with tourists has pushed up prices, Bondi Surf Seafoods is still great value for the suburb, confirmed by the regular queue of locals.

You can grab fish with more than enough chips for the average appetite for $13. Of the grilled options, the pack of octopus, prawns and calamari for $20 is a standout.

After experimenting with the fryer to create banana ($2.80) and pineapple ($2.50) fritters, the owners have perfected the best Deep Fried Mars Bar in Sydney, the Mars Bar Delight for $4.50, getting the thumbs up from Mars Corp.

Bondi Surf Seafoods is open 7 days a week 9am - 9.30pm.

Stanmore Fish & Chips - 106 Percival Rd, Stanmore - (02) 9568 2679
A local icon for over 30 years, Stanmore Fish and Chips recently changed hands, leading to a renovation but also a return to the great service, prices and quality offered by the original owners.

The hand cut chips are slightly less chunky but still the best in the Inner West, and the potato scallops are at the same standard. Raw seafood, especially the salmon, is popular for locals prepping a barbecue dinner.

Fish and hand-cut chips is great value at $9 with combo packs of fried fish (hake, salmon, barra, prawns, octopus or calamari) and the same great chips with salad and lemon ranging from $15 - 17.

Stanmore Fish & Chips is open Wed - Sun, 10.30am - 9pm.

Beer battered fish and chips with tartare sauce (by Blue Fish)

Blue Fish - 287 Harbourside Promenade, Darling Harbour - (02) 9211 0315
For a special occasion, the Blue Fish restaurant is the best fine dining choice in this top 5.

Grab a table on the patio at Blue Fish, next door to the newly renovated Convention Centre and overlooking the attractions of Darling Harbour on a sunny afternoon. The service, particularly from Yannick, one of the standout servers, is friendly and attentive, offering helpful suggestions from the food and wine menus.

Beer battered fish with chips and tartare sauce is $23.50 while the popular seafood platter for two, with salmon, barramundi, barbecue king prawns and calamari, Alaskan crab and seared scallops is $120. There are also seafood paella, rock lobster and prawn linguine dishes.

Blue Fish is open 7 days a week from 8am - 10pm, closing at 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

Fat Fish - 109 Johnston St, Annandale - (02) 9660 3474
Fat Fish, another family-run favourite, is a strong competitor with Stanmore F&C for the best of the Inner West, perhaps the best in Sydney.

Constantly busy, the fish from the local market is quickly snapped, particularly the grilled barramundi with garlic butter, herbs, chips and salad for $17.90.

While parents can enjoy beer battered fish and chips for $11.50, there are child-friendly fish burgers with tomato, lettuce and tartar sauce for $9.50. If you like a salad with your chips, the Greek and Mediterranean salads are homemade specialities.

Fat Fish is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

Chish N Fips - 200 Arden St, Coogee - (02) 9664 7100
Although prices, service, freshness, cleanliness and spelling are important, the fish has to be moist and the batter crispy if a fish and chip shop can last in Coogee.

Although the owners might need a spellchecker, Chish and Fips know how to cook perfect fish for hungry hikers completing the Bondi to Coogee coastal trail. Often packed with tourists, the queue still contains the suburb's toughest critics - the locals, proving they must be a hit.

Fish and chips is $12.30 for hoki, with barramundi or flathead for $17.90 and salmon for $18.90. As a bonus, there are plenty of places to sit in the park, beach or picnic tables to enjoy your fish feast.

Chish N Fips is open 7 days a week 11am - 6pm.

Smith's Seafoods (Blakehurst near the older iron bridge) and Oceans Foods (Drummoyne). The others listed above don't even come close.

My favourite is Fisherman's Fresh in Broadway Shopping Centre (not CentralPark) - the fish shop just a few shops before Coles supermarket on the left if you are walking towards Coles.

Basic battered fish and chips for around $9 - more like $11 if you select salmon, flathead or such

Nice Mandarin speaking female owner trying to do her best - last time we visited with friends she was so happy she gave us double-sized servings of salmon and free whitebait.

My favourite chips - golden crunchy and sweet-smelling - don't know what oil she uses - but they taste great to me !
