With the Easter school holidays a stone's throw away and the winter school holidays not far behind, Melbourne families have a lot to look forward to in terms of theatre. Melbourne prides itself on being at the forefront of culture in Australia, and theatre shows are one of the central aspects of this. Children living in our wonderful city are blessed with a huge range of venues in which to enjoy the delights of the theatre and more and more family-friendly or kid-centric offerings are ours for the taking. Below is a list of shows which will be gracing the Melbourne theatre scene over the next few months:

Billionaire Boy

Venue: Arts Centre Melbourne

Dates: 6th – 14th April

Info: Billionaire Boy is based on a David Walliams book by the same name (ask your primary school child – these books are super popular). The story follows a boy called Joe, whose Dad becomes a billionaire after inventing some amazing new toilet paper. Joe and his Dad have everything they could possibly want or need, but Joe is sad and lonely. Follow his struggles as he tries to make friends in this funny and touching show.

Splash Test Dummies

Venue: Shirley Burke Theatre in Parkdale

Dates: 8th April (1pm and 4pm)

Info: The Dummies perform a circus show with a splashy-splashy theme and a lot of slapstick comedy. The show also includes breath-taking stunts, acrobatics and juggling. Guaranteed to make you drown in tears of laughter.

•The Gruffalo

Venue: Various theatres around Melbourne, including Melbourne Athenaeum

Dates: April 9th – April 14th (Athenaeum)

Info: Most people (okay parents) will be very familiar with the story of The Gruffalo, written by the queen of kids' fiction - Julia Donaldson. Young children will love watching the mouse on his adventure in the deep dark woods where he uses his quick thinking to scare off a whole host of predators, not least the infamous Gruffalo.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr

Venue: Drum Theatre, Dandenong

Dates: 13th July at 2pm and 6pm

Info: Masquerade Youth Productions is taking off on a high-flying adventure with beloved airborne car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Based on the popular children's film and the Broadway musical, there will be plenty of action and musical fun for everyone.

Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts

Venue: Frankston Arts Centre

Dates: 22nd August (11am and 6pm)

Info: I saw this show the first time it came around to Frankston Arts Centre and was totally wowed by it, as was my then 7 year old. Hold on tight for some gruesome tales and grotesque characters in this slightly sinister performance of twisted fairy tales. If your child is a Dahl fan, they will love this.
