You're not an Aussie if you haven't hit the beach at least once this summer. Nothing could be more quintessentially Australian than a day at the seaside complete with an Esky full of sandwiches, the obligatory cricket set and a pop-up tent (which you will never manage to get back into the bag first time). But not all beaches are made equal. As every mum will tell you, choosing a beach which is kid-friendly saves a lot of stress when the family are in tow. Below are my five favourite beaches, from Bayside to the Peninsula; chosen for safe swimming, sandcastle-worthy sand and bountiful rockpools.

1. Mothers Beach in Mornington This beach features a beautiful curved bay with sparkling, clear water. The sand is soft and the beach itself is fairly small so it's easy to keep an eye on little ones – it's called Mothers Beach for a reason. Up the top and across the road are a great playground and a spacious park. There are toilets right on the beach and a ramp leads from the road down to the beach (make sure you get the right ramp as one has steps at the end).

2. Rosebud Beach (end of Jetty Road) Rosebud is a lovely seaside town and its beach is perfect for young children. When the sun is shining the sea is a beautiful turquoise sheet and wonderfully clear. The water stays shallow until a long way out, and at low tide sandbars create little islands and pools. You can also take a walk along the jetty and sometimes see the resident stingrays make an appearance. There's an excellent playground right by the beach which also has toilet facilities and barbeques.

3. Frankston Foreshore Frankston has a thriving beach scene and there are plenty of facilities at the main beach. A newly updated playground is a short boardwalk away from the main drag. There is also an information centre, a restaurant and an ice cream kiosk. Toilets and barbeques can be found at the playground. The long pier provides some respite from the sun on hot days if you manage to grab a spot underneath it, and at low tide, the shallow water is warm and perfect for toddlers.

4. Parkdale Beach There is a very picturesque stretch of beach in Parkdale, just to the right of the Parkdale Life Saving Club (if you're looking towards the ocean). The glittering water contrasts beautifully with a decrepit assortment of beams which presumably used to be a jetty and are now a photographer's dream. My kids love to balance on the beams and jump into the water. At low tide, many little pools are uncovered and further to your right a big rock juts out of the water. Around the rock are tide pools where your little explorers will find all sorts of ocean wonders. Toilets are located in the carpark so a short walk is necessary.

5. Ricketts Point At low tide there is a plethora of sea life waiting to be discovered at this beach. The rockpools are many and varied and will provide hours of entertainment for curious beachcombers. This is not so much a swimming beach and it is not as pretty as some of its counterparts, but it definitely wins on the nature front. Ricketts Point Beachside Cafe is close by for refreshments, but as far as I'm aware there aren't any other toilet facilities nearby so come prepared!

What are you waiting for? Slip, slop, slap and go have some fun!
