Doughnuts (or donuts) are essentially a sweet snack of fried dough. Across the world there are different varieties, including the classic cinnamon ring doughnuts, glazed doughnuts, round doughnuts with fillings, and long Spanish doughnuts dipped in chocolate. With so many possible shapes and sizes, where can you find the best doughnuts in Melbourne?



American Doughnut Kitchen - Queen Victoria Markets (Queen St)

Starting from the heart of Melbourne CBD, Queen Victoria Markets itself has two doughnut vans. On one side is the American Doughnut Kitchen, which is a family business that has run from the same van since the 1950s. The doughnuts are fluffy and round, with a bright red raspberry filling, sprinkled generously with granulated sugar. Fans argue that Olympic Donuts, a jam doughnut store outside Footscray station, is an equally matched competitor.



Spanish Donuts - Queen Victoria Markets (Peel St)

On the other side of the markets is the Spanish type doughnuts, also known as churros. Churros are long strands of dough, piped with a star-shaped nozzle, and are served either plain with icing sugar, or with chocolate dipping sauces.

Whilst this franchise is not highly regarded as top quality churros, the churros trend in Melbourne CBD really took off with with the opening of various branches of San Churro. Aside from churros and white, milk, dark dipping sauces, San Churro also serves a variety of hot chocolates, truffles and desserts.



Krispy Kreme Doughnuts - multiple in CBD and Melbourne Airport

Coming from a region without Krispy Kreme branches, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are commonly the "souvenirs" friends bring back after a trip interstate. Ah, the slight crunch of the ice-glazed doughnut, with a soft bite. Or choose from one of the many flavours - cheesecake, blueberry filled, cinnamon apple and more.
