A typical French breakfast wouldn't be typically French without a croissant. They're not very Weight Watchers friendly, but these buttery breadstuffs are absolutely delicious when they're done right. Finding a good croissant is not always that easy, sometimes it seems more people know how to get them wrong rather than get them right. So we've decided to try and find Adelaide's best croissants, but we need your help.
If you're after somewhere to start why not try one of Adelaide's most authentic Parisian Patisseries,
Mulot's Patisserie . The small store on King William Road stocks croissants along with many other French treats. Or go for breakfast or brunch at
Au Matin Calme , a cute little spot on Hutt Street. Both spots are undeniably French, but you'll have to tell us if their croissants pass the test.
A very high contender is
Boulangerie 113 ; they focus on their sour doughs but they don't put any less love into their French pastries. The croissants are rich and buttery, and the layers are visible as soon as one slips into your hands. Outside they're flaky and crisp, but inside the croissants are light and airy. They're not only made the way croissants should be made, but they're also made with quality ingredients.
At
From Scratch Patisserie you need to try their almond croissants. It's a hard choice, every Friday morning they set up their kitchen countertop next to Coffee Branch on Leigh Street and it's full with so many tasty pastries, but the croissants are definitely worth it. You'll leave with a satisfied stomach and a nice dusting of icing sugar all over you.
Finally, with a croissant that is so nearly makes the mark, is
Public Cafe & Bar . The new spot on Franklin Street hasn't been shy of sharing their in house pastry chef, and you can tell he knows his stuff with the quality of their croissants. There are well defined layers, flaky pastry, and a good flavour. Unfortunately there is one letdown; Public's croissants just don't have the right mouthfeel. The greasy layer that's left in your mouth makes you wonder if they skip the butter all together for margarine instead. They're so close, yet so far.
So how about all of you, do you have a favourite croissant spot around town? Let us know in the comments and help us track down Adelaide's best croissants.
