In the past couple of years, I have really got into playing cozy games on my Nintendo Switch. Cozy games are a flourishing genre of video games that feature cute characters and focus on non-violent and low-stress activities like life simulation, farming, cooking, gathering, decorating, exploration, artistic expression, or nurturing. What I like so much about cozy games is how they make me feel. Cozy games are warm and comforting. They are a welcome distraction from the grind of day-to-day life and help me feel less stressed. In this article, I will list some of my favourite cozy games on the Nintendo Switch.

1. Dorfromantik

Developer: Toukana Interactive
Release Date: 29 September 2022
More Information:

Dorfromantik is an award-winning puzzle and relaxing city builder game by the studio Toukana Interactive that sees the player place hexagonal tiles on a map to create a beautiful and ever-growing idyllic landscape. Dorfromantik received positive praise from critics for its soothing ambience, soundtrack, art style, and for its calming and meditative gameplay. How the game works is you have to link tiles together on the map to form winding rivers, lakes, forests, and sprawling cities. You will be given challenges in the game like having to group different types of tiles together and you can unlock rewards. You will be scored on how well your tiles link together on the map. You can take as long as you like to place your tiles on the map and there is no pressure to manage resources. I've had so much fun playing Dorfromantik. I don't have much time to game some days, so I like that I can pick this game up and play for five to ten minutes, and feel relaxed. It's the perfect cozy game for someone who enjoys puzzles.

2. Good Pizza, Great Pizza

Developer: TapBlaze
Release Date: 3 September 2020
More Information:

Good Pizza, Great Pizza is a cooking simulation game developed by TapBlaze that lets a player open and manage their own pizza shop. Do your best to get customers' orders right so you can keep your doors open. You can use the profits you make from sales to purchase new ingredients for pizza toppings and to upgrade and decorate your pizza shop. This game can be surprisingly frustrating at times but is still a lot of fun. I keep coming back to it hoping that I will be able to save up enough of my profits to unlock a new pizza topping, purchase some new furnishings for my shop, or hire an extra set of hands to help me in the kitchen.

3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: 20 March 2020
More Information:

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a social simulation game developed and published by Nintendo and the fifth title in the Animal Crossing series. The game begins with the player moving to a deserted island after purchasing a deserted island package from Tom Nook. After arriving on the island, the player can purchase a block of land and a tent from Tom Nook for a small fortune, which they can upgrade into a house after paying off a mortgage. They can gather and craft items, sell things for bells, decorate their house, create their own designs, socialise with a community of cute anthropomorphic animals, and can customise the island how they wish. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released on 20 March 2020 to critical acclaim. The game broke multiple sales records upon its release due to it being released when so many people were confined to their homes due to lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the best-selling game in the Animal Crossing series and the 14th bestselling video game of all time. Critics praised the game for its sense of escapism and for being a distraction from the COVID-19 pandemic. I put hundreds of hours into this game. I decorated every inch of my island and grew attached to my villagers. The game is a cozy game classic.

4. Cozy Grove

Developer: Spry Fox
Release Date: 8 April 2021
More Information:

Cozy Grove is a life-sim game from Spry Fox where the player washes up on a colourless, haunted, ever-changing island called Cozy Grove. As a Spirit Scout, you will wander the island each day, searching for hidden secrets and befriending the lost souls that populate the island. You will go fishing, craft decorations, purchase items, complete quests, gather spirit animals, collect spirit logs, furnish your cabin, and help bring colour back to Cozy Grove. I really enjoyed playing Cozy Grove. It was a lot like Animal Crossing but all of the residents are ghosts. I liked befriending each of the spirits that lived on the island and helping them piece together their memories so they could find peace and move on. I had fun exploring the island and discovering its secrets and watching it come alive as I lit lamps and restored colour to the landscape. I spent so many hours purchasing flowers and plants to decorate the island. I found it so relaxing. I really liked that the island expanded as I completed each quest and revealed more places to explore. It kept me hooked for a long time.

5. Lil Gator Game

  • Developer: MegaWobble
  • Release Date:** 14 December 2022
    More Information:

[/LINK]Lil Gator Game is an action-adventure game from MegaWobble about a little gator who wants desperately to play with his older sister but she is busy with schoolwork. He decides he will play by himself while she studies and spend his time coming up with a great game that the two of them will be able to play together. Exploration is the main purpose of this game. Armed with a toy sword and shield, you will make a massive open-world island your playground. You will battle monsters made out of cardboard, make friends, discover hidden areas, and earn unique weapons and abilities. Lil Gator Game is such a cute game. The art style is very reminiscent of Paper Mario and The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker. I love the cute way Lil Gator runs around the island, his sense of adventure and wild imagination, and how he looks up to his sister.

    6. Kirby and the Forgotten Land

    Developer: HAL Laboratory
    Release Date: 22 March 2022
    More Information:

Kirby and the Forgotten Land was developed by HAL Laboratory and published on the Nintendo Switch on 22 March 2022. After being sucked into a strange vortex, Kirby wakes up in a post-apocalyptic landscape, where civilisation has been abandoned and left to rot and the Waddle Dees have all been captured. Together with his new friend Elfilin, Kirby sets off on an adventure to rescue the Waddle Dees, and to find a way home. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the thirteenth instalment in the Kirby franchise, and the first title in the series to be a 3D action-adventure. The game was a commercial success selling over 6.12 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling game in the Kirby series, and one of the best-selling games on the Nintendo Switch. Critics praised the game for its innovative level design, graphics, gameplay, content, and soundtrack. I am absolutely nuts about this game. It is one of my favourite games on the Nintendo Switch. I loved the creative exploration-based level design, the abandoned city setting, the large number of collectibles available to find, all the different copy abilities, the optional challenges, and Kirby's brand-new ability Mouthful Mode. Mouthful Mode is a special ability of Kirby's where he can inhale an object, like a lightbulb or a car, and change his shape to mimic that object to help him pass obstacles in a level. I had so much fun turning Kirby into a car to race past enemies, a lightbulb to light the way, a vending machine to shoot cans at enemies, and a fan to glide through the air.

In each level, you will be given clues about the life story of the protagonist as you unpack their belongings and try to find the right place to put them in their new home. It really surprised me how much I enjoyed Unpacking. I found it to be such a calming, zen gaming experience. I loved the simple gameplay design and the soothing soundtrack. Who would've thought that a game about unpacking could be so soothing? What a fantastic game.

    8. Mini Motorways

    Developer: Dinosaur Polo Club
    Release Date: 11 May 2022
    More Information:[/LINK

Mini Motorways is a puzzle strategy game about designing a road network for an ever-growing growing city. The game was developed by Dinosaur Polo Club and released on the Nintendo Switch on 19 September 2019. It is the follow-up to their 2015 video game Mini Metro. Mini Motorways tasks the player with drawing roads to link houses together so cars can travel along the roads to reach their destinations. The houses and cars each have different colours. The player has to link buildings of identical colours together (red to red, yellow to yellow, etc) so cars of the same colour can travel between them. As the game progresses, the difficulty level will slowly increase, as more and more buildings pop up on the map and the roads become jammed with traffic. There is a timer and at the end of each week in the game the player can choose between two upgrade choices, which can include extra road tiles and special tools like bridges, tunnels, traffic lights, roundabouts, and motorways. This game really took me by surprise. I wasn't sure it was for me but then it really hooked me. This was a really fun, addictive little puzzle game. I really enjoyed it.

    9. Spiritfarer

    Developer: Thunder Lotus Games
    Release Date: 18 August 2020
    More Information:

Spiritfarer is one of the most emotional and beautiful games that I have played on the Nintendo Switch. Spiritfarer is a cozy management sim and sandbox action game about dying from developer Thunder Lotus. In the game, you play as Stella, a young woman on the brink of death, who becomes a "Spiritfarer" and is tasked with ferrying the spirits of the dead to the afterlife through the Everdoor. With her trusted cat Daffodil by her side, Stella will embark on a journey across a serene ocean and collect lost souls that need help finding their way to the Everdoor. Along the way, she will collect materials that she can use to build kitchens, cabins, gardens, and other home amenities onboard her ship that will help her to better care for the spirits she finds along the way. As the spirits start to feel more comfortable around Stella, they will slowly reveal more of their backstory, and when they are ready will ask to be taken through the Everdoor and into the afterlife. I really enjoyed this game. I adored the sombre stories of each of the spirits, the art style, the calming gameplay, and the emotional soundtrack. The game made me very sad at times but was also so pleasant like getting a comforting hug.

    10. Taiko No Tatsujin Rhythm Festival

    Developer: BANDAI NAMCO Amusement Inc.
    Release Date: 22 September 2022
    More Information:

Taiko No Tatsujin Rhythm Festival is a musical action game that was developed by BANDAI NAMCO and published on the Nintendo Switch on September 2022. It is the latest in the Taiko no Tatsujin series of games which translates as "Master of the drums" in English. How the games work is the player simulates playing a taiko drum in time with music. The Taiko no Tatsujin games are very popular within Japan. They have been released on multiple platforms, including mobile and arcade. Localised versions of the games in English, Chinese, and Korean have also been released. I adore these games. Rhythm Festival is the third game in the series that I have played on the Nintendo Switch. I love how adorable these games are and the wide library of music songs you can choose from. Most of them are in Japanese. The song library is always massive and includes selections from classical, pop, movies, anime and more. These games can be difficult at times, but they're still a lot of fun. You can choose the difficulty level that suits you best. I use the pro-controller most of the time. So far Rhythm Festival is my favourite game in the series. There is a story mode, a taiko mode, an online mode, and a party mode where you can play with up to four players. My favourite mode is taiko mode which has an impressive library of over 76 different songs which includes music from Sailor Moon, the Legend of Zelda, Kirby, and Super Mario. These games are so much fun.

Summary: A good cozy game can feel like a comforting hug
