There are thousands of competitions running at any one time in multiple places: online, TV, radio, FB, Twitter, Instagram, papers, magazines, supermarkets, festivals, conferences and more. Many competitions are free, some require the purchase of tickets or products.

Entering may be as easy as providing an email address or liking a Facebook page. Or there may be forms to fill in, the requirement to write 25 words or less, take photos and videos or other tasks required by the competition's organisers.

Cars, cash, holidays, houses, renovations, furniture, whitegoods, vouchers for music, groceries, hardware, clothes, and wine, almost any item or service you can think of will be the prize in a competition somewhere and although it's a much overused phrase, you do have to be in it to win it.

Entering competitions is such a popular activity that there are websites that collate lists of current offerings and organise them in various ways to make it easier to choose which ones you might like to enter. The websites don't run the competitions, they just provide information.

Here are five of the best that are focussed on Australian competitions.

Win Free Stuff

Win Free Stuff's site is well laid out and easy to navigate. The home page lists new, closing and popular competitions as well as options to view competitions by type of competition, type of prize, and by State. It's free to use and you don't have to sign up though you will need to if you wish to use some of their tools such as keeping track of the competitions you have entered.

Competitions Guide

Competitions Guide is well known and has had good media coverage . On the site you can search for competitions by type of prize, there's sections on new and closing competitions and tips on winning. Join for free as a Standard Member or Go Premium which involves a fee.

A community of "compers" with forum style presentation of competitions plus tips and tricks and discussion threads. This is a subscription site with membership offering tracking of entries and multiple options to sort and filter competition listings.

This is also a comping community and the site is presented in forum style. There's a scrolling list of recently added competitions and competitions are also listed by type. Free to join but note you will need an Australian ISP email address (Optus, Telstra, TPG etc).

Competitions.com.au

An easy to use search on the homepage offers filtering of competitions by keyword (eg: car), state, category and competition type. Registration is free.

Things to Note

We've all received one of those fake emails saying we've won millions of dollars. There are scams out there so here's a good article on what to look out for to make sure you are entering genuine competitions with genuine prizes.

When it comes to making a choice of what competitions to enter, it makes sense to spend your time on those offering prizes that you actually want.

I wish you very good luck should you decide to try out some of these competition sites. If you have any wise advice or would like to tell us about your experience "comping" please leave a comment below.
