It's certainly a lot easier to get a good coffee these days than it was 5 years ago - cafe owners now recognise the value in using quality blends and training their baristas - but there's still good coffee, great coffee and crap coffee, and the issue of consistency. This review is not concerned with atmosphere, decor or service. This is purely about the coffee.

Espresso

My hubby and I are both passionate about our brew and will go to extreme lengths to procure the best. Over the years we've established what we believe to be the three places in West End, where you're guaranteed to get the best coffee.

1. Blackstar Coffee - 44 Thomas St, West End

By far my favourite of all time, Blackstar roast their own beans on premise and seem to hire experienced baristas. The result is strong, smooth, sweet, and everything coffee is meant to be. I have never had a bad, or even mediocre, coffee here. If you're a fan of iced coffee, the Blackstar cold pressed varieties (black, full cream and soy) are heaven in a bottle . And as an added bonus, Blackstar live by the 'think global act local' motto.

2. West End Coffee House - 80 Vulture St, West End

The Coffee House uses the increasingly popular Campos coffee.
The owner seems to genuinely care about coffee, and providing a quality product. I'm certain of a great coffee every time and I always enjoy every last drop.

3. Ugees - 80 Boundary St, West End

Ugees switched from DiBella to their own blend over a year ago and it has done them no harm whatsoever. What I love about this place is there are no meals, no cakes, it is all about the coffee. The baristas know what they're doing and the coffee is consistently excellent, even the takeaways.

Special Mention Award goes to Wrapture Cafe - 71 Russell St, West End

Famed for their unique and fabulous wraps, this cafe is overlooked in the coffee department, which is a shame as they can always be relied upon for a quality brew. They also do a killer spicy hot chocolate and the best Chai tea in Brisbane!

So if you happen to be in West End and are on the lookout for a great coffee, I recommend you give one of these outlets a try. I'd love to know if other people have different West End coffee favourites.
