Living in Melbourne will give the best of us coffee addictions and cake cravings. There are so many independently owned cafes and cake shops in the city and surrounding suburbs that are well worth going out of your way for and offer more charm and intimacy than some of the robotic chains scattered across Melbourne.

1) Royal Domain Cafe, 360 St Kilda Road

This friendly Italian owned cafe offers excellent service with a smile. The fresh and aromatic coffee is the best in the city, by far. This is a popular hot spot for people working in the area and gets very busy in the morning and lunchtime. There's a range of freshly prepared hearty meals on offer, which changes from day to day. There's also an array of cakes and cookies to accompany a nice hot cup of coffee.

2) Acland Street, St Kilda

It's impossible to choose the best cake shop on Acland Street , so I'd suggest taking a stroll down the street and sampling them all! Acland Street is famous for its delicious cakes and anyone with a sweet tooth should definitely check it out. It is a great place to visit in the summer time when you can sit outside and soak up the atmosphere on this eccentric street. There's also lots of vintage shops if you fancy a bit of shopping too.

3) Goodness Gracious, 744 Riversdale Road, Camberwell

Known for their vanilla slice of the year, Goodness Gracious is a quaint cafe very popular for lunch and coffee on the go. Limited seating forces most people to order takeaways, but their award winning vanilla slice lives up to expectations. The perfectly fluffy and creamy cake goes down a treat with a cup of coffee.

4) RMB, Degraves Street, CBD

Degraves Street is a busy and vibrant lane, just off Flinders Street and Flinders Lane. It's full of places to eat and outdoor seating which is heated during the winter months. RMB offers great coffee, food and atmosphere. They even do gluten free alternatives for a couple of bucks extra. It's a good place to catch up with friends whilst choosing from a range of dishes and tasty cakes.

5) St Ali, 12-18 Yarra Place, South Melbourne

Hidden in the corner of Clarenden and York Street, South Melbourne, you'll find Yarra Place, a silent street disguising a popular coffee shop. St Ali is filled with locals and professionals who stop by for their morning coffee, afternoon lunch and even scheduled meetings. Whatever the reason, St Ali attracts people with it's friendly service, delicious meals and even better coffee. Definitely worth a visit if you're on the lookout for a great cup of coffee.
