We all have a favourite Melbourne restaurant or cafe which falls under the 'cheap eat' category, after all, 'cheap' food doesn't always taste, well, cheap.

One particularly popular 'cheap' Melbourne establishment which comes to mind is Samurai, a Japanese restaurant located at 804 Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn. This establishment is always busy; it doesn't matter if it is midweek or the weekend, it is always populated with customers seeking a quick and affordable meal.

The restaurant itself, in a past life, was probably a home and as a result Samurai has a main dining area and kitchen on ground level, and if you venture upstairs there are several dining rooms. Samurai has an extensive menu, which includes entrées, mains and desserts (milkshakes) priced from $4 up to $15. The best value for money is the dinner box, which includes your choice of soup, entrée, main and drink/dessert for $14.

Samurai is a great place to go with a group and pick a selection of dishes to share. The food is decent, given the price, and the service is adequate. It is not a fine dining experience, but if you are looking for good value for money, you should give Samurai a try. It is a very popular restaurant in Hawthorn, which is open for lunch and dinner, Monday to Saturday. You can opt for takeaway as well.

Other cheap Melbourne eateries include The Vegie Bar in Fitzroy, Naked For Satan in Fitzroy and Brother Baba Budan in the CBD.

If you know of a great affordable eatery in Melbourne, please let us know by leaving a comment below.

We look forward to your suggestions.

The obvious suggestion - Lentil as Anything. Eating healthy food, supporting a good cause - can't get much better than that.
