Port Macquarie is a scenic, seaside town along the NSW coastline, located 4 hours north of Sydney and 5 hours south of the Gold Coast. It is popular all year around, but particularly in the warmer months with holiday-makers, families, grey nomads and backpackers, as they stop at this mid-way point on their way to Queensland. Although it is the beaches that mainly attract the tourists, it is also the scenery, the restaurants, the wineries, the family activities and views, which make it such a popular holiday destination.

One way to appreciate the beauty of the region is to stop off at one of the scenic cafes along the beachfront or the Hastings River, to enjoy a meal while looking out for dolphins, pelicans and wildlife. These are my family's favourite cafes with water views in Port Macquarie - what are yours? Please leave a comment at the top of this article and share your top tips. When the view is this picturesque, you won't ever want to leave...

Start your day with a healthy breakfast at Salty Crew Kiosk, Town Beach. Image: Salty Crew Kiosk Facebook

Salty Crew Kiosk is the name of the small café and kiosk that is located in the Town Beach Marine Rescue building at Town Beach. It has funky tables, a healthy menu and the best view in town. It sits literally metres from the water and is a popular venue with walkers early in the morning, and locals and visitors all day long. If you are walking your dog, stop for a coffee and your pooch will enjoy a rest under the table in the shade. If you stay for breakfast, the Acai Bowl is a winner! See here for details. For another beachfront venue, also check out Sandbox at Flynns Beach - you can't get much closer to the water than these two venues!

Seasalt is a popular café with the locals, this time located up the Hastings River at the Port Macquarie Marina. This café has inside tables if the weather is windy, however, most people prefer to sit outside by the water and enjoy the views of the boats in the marina. If you have kids, the friendly staff behind the counter will provide a small tub of fish food to drop down to the small bream, just next to the cafe.

On our last visit to Seasalt café, our family fed over a hundred fish, watched a water dragon run under our feet and admired a pelican, sitting just metres away. It is also the ideal cafe for early risers, as it opens at 6am every day. Just like Salty Crew Kiosk above, the Acai Bowls are divine! See here for details and here for a full article.

The Beach House is a larger café, bar and restaurant, located on the Town Green overlooking the Hastings River. This café is one of the most visited in town, as it is centrally located near the town centre and also at the end of the Breakwall walk, which hundreds of people walk every day. Many people, including our family, often walk up the Breakwall, stop for a cold drink or breakfast at The Beach House and then walk back again - there is no better way to start the day. See here for details.

Another favourite is Rivermark café on the Hastings River, for views out to the river with dolphins and birdlife. Another café with water views of a different kind, is Abundance café on the way to Wauchope. The water views are over of a dam full of water lilies, which mysteriously move as turtles swim underneath. If you love birds, you will appreciate the beauty and grace of the water birds, as they step through the reeds around the shoreline.

These are our family's favourite cafes with water views in Port Macquarie - do you have a favourite? If so, please leave a comment at the top of this article and share your favourite spot, and why. Port Macquarie is so beautifully scenic that you can't go wrong at any waterside location that you happen to find, close to your hotel or out exploring.

Where will you be going this weekend, for the best view in town?
