One of the saddest things about the almost-complete monopoly of Coles and Woolworths, is the loss of that special relationship people used to have with their butchers. I'm fairly sure that the 17-year old working in the meat section of your local Coles doesn't know your name, he doesn't know what cut of meat you prefer, and it's unlikely he will joint a whole chicken for you while you wait. These were just some of the things the family butcher we used to go to when I was a kid would know and do.
The question is, do these family-style butchers still exist, and where are the best ones? I know there is nothing like the service and quality you get at Petersons Quality Meats in New Farm, and I have heard that the butcher at the Barracks is also really good. If you know a really good butcher, leave a comment and tell us about them.
I wholeheartedly agree. I think the sausages are the best from Petersons! I've also heard of a great one on Stanley Street Wooloongabba, next to the Woollongabba Art Gallery at the intersection of Annerley Road. I know they always seem to be advertising interesting types of meats on their sidewalk sign.
G.E. Mallan's Bulk Meats at Fairfield. They stock the best mince and diet mince I've ever come across. The people who work there have done so, or have been in that business for years and it shows with their quality attention to quality of product and customer service.
Perry's prime meats on Tingal Rd. in Wynnum. Their service is very friendly and personal. They have got good quality produce and often special treats such as rabbit or duck. Their sausages are tasty and their ham is one of the best in the area. They also sale tasmanian ready made curry mixture that tastes fabulous.
Gordon and Luxton in Graceville! Chris Luxton is an amazing young guy, whose shop is immaculate and his customer service is second to none- from ALL his team! I really recommend that you have a look- well worth it.
I shop at Jack Purcell Meats at Virginia. They have been around for over 70 years and it's still owned by the same family, now with the third generation working in store. Their service is amazing..http://www.jackpurcellmeats.com.au
I can never go past the quality & price of super butcher! Their grassfed produce is miles above the supermarkets premium range in both price & taste! However this may change as the creators have been forced to sell :(
The butcher next to Food for Less at Annerley,I think its called Annerley Meats is great. They smoke their own ham, too die for! He has had numerous awards for his sausages over the years, and has a remarklable variety, and are very good value for money. They also sell frozen meals and their curries are yummy.
The butchers themselves are friendly and very helpful. It's an old style butchery, you can imagine sawdust on the floors ages ago.
I see so many of the oldtimers there again and again asking for two chops
or a quarter pound of mince. He,ll alos give you a bone for the dog, and ask it,s size!
Allsop & England Organic Butcher in Coorparoo.
