Gone are the days when getting a burger meant getting something greasy and sloppy from your local fish and chip shop or something equally artery-friendly from a multinational fast food chain. Instead we now have much tastier options thanks to the multitude of gourmet burger bars popping up all over Sydney.

There are many different places you could grab a good burger, but here are a few worth checking out.

A delicious option with an authentic Aussie feel is Ben Bry Burgers of Manly. Located just off Manly's Corso, Ben Bry pride themselves on providing "real food" cooked fast and fresh to order. Although on some sunny weekends you might be waiting a little while, the wait is definitely worth it. Ben Bry offers a range of options, all made with good quality ingredients and packed with flavour. There's something for everyone with beef, chicken and lamb options as well tofu, barramundi and falafel. Furthermore Ben Bry is just steps away from the vibrant Manly Beach. Where better to enjoy your burger on a sunny day?

In the next few weeks a second Ben Bry will be opening on The Strand in Dee Why. Not only will this store be three times bigger but will be licensed. Enjoy your burger by the beach with a beer. It doesn't get more Australian than that.

If you haven't tried it already, definitely head to The Counter in Crows Nest. The Counter, a futuristic-yet-American-style diner, is the only one of its kind in Australia. The Counter can otherwise be found in numerous locations across the United States. The burgers at The Counter are entirely customisable. You are given a clipboard and a pencil and are instructed to tick what you want on the form provided. You get to choose everything from the type of bread, to the size of your meat (150g, 300g or 450g), to the sauce and the fillings. There's also the option to get a "burger bowl" which, essentially is your burger fillings in a bowl of lettuce rather than inside a burger bun. There are a range of extras to choose from including sweet potato chips and crispy fried onion strings. If you're not afraid of billions of calories, order a "Snickers" shake. It's not on their menu but being a cross between their chocolate and peanut butter shakes, they'll make it for you. Delicious but deadly.

Another burger bar worth trying, also in Crows Nest (and various other locations) is Grill'd. Grill'd strives to offer healthier burgers made with good quality ingredients. Grill'd doesn't come with clipboards and the burgers already have fillings allocated, but like any burger joint you can add and subtract fillings as you like. The Grill'd burgers are ridiculously tasty with perfectly seasoned meat, delicious sauces and fresh salad. You have more options than your classic beef including chicken, lamb and vegetarian options. There's also a couple of "snack" sized options for smaller eaters. The chips at Grill'd are chunky and seasoned with herbs and salt and are definitely worth ordering to complement your burger.

The gourmet burger phenomenon has spread all over sydney so keep your eyes peeled for other tasty places, like Justin North's Charlie & Co at the new Pitt St Westfield and Moo Gourmet Burgers in Bondi, Newtown or Coogee.
