Are you are thinking about taking the 1 hour drive from Newcastle to Nelson Bay this weekend to go for a swim, catch some fish, hire a boat or explore the Stockton Sand Dunes? If so, why not hit the road a little earlier and start your day at one of the many cafes around Nelson Bay. If you are on a health kick, there are many healthy cafes to enjoy around the region for a bowl of granola, an Acai bowl or a protein smoothie. A healthy breakfast is the best way to start the day in this holiday destination - you will need all the energy you can get for the day ahead!
These are my personal favourite healthy breakfast cafes, however, if you discover any others on your trip that you believe should be on this list, please leave a comment at the top of this article and share your discovery. Take your appetite and your sun cream, as these cafes have outdoor seating areas to take in the stunning, water views...
Water views & colourful superfood bowls at Blueys!
Blueys is located literally right on the water at the d'Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay, with bright blue water just metres from your table! This popular cafe offers a healthy breakfast menu, with a wide range of colourful options with fruits that are in season. On our recent visits, I couldn't go past Superfood Breakfast Bowl, which I had 3 weekends in a row! This is the perfect breakfast venue if you are going on a dolphin or whale watching tour, as the entrance to the cruise boats is right out the front of the cafe. If you have kids, ensure you go to the 10:30am fish feeding - also just a few metres from the front of the cafe! See here for details. For a full article on Blueys, see here.
The Little Nel is a popular, healthy cafe that is located a short walk up a hill from Nelson Bay Town Centre. It is popular with locals and tourists alike, who discover this relaxed cafe with water glimpses through the trees. The menu is particularly healthy, with gluten-free and vegan options. The meals are also particularly well-presented, with a punch of flavour to match. I always order the toasted muesli or acai bowl with seasonal fruits - you won't find much healthier! See here for details. For a full article on The Little Nel, see here.
Inner Light Tearooms is located at Little Beach, one beach away from Nelson Bay itself. It is located at the top of a headland, with sweeping views across Shoal Bay and towards the heads of Port Stephens. The breakfast menu at the cafe isn't overly extensive, however, it has some tasty, healthy options for both breakfast and lunch, which you can order all day between 9am - 3pm. On our family's last visit, I chose the Granola from the Breakfast Menu, whilst my partner ordered a Chicken Focaccia and salad from the Lunch Menu and our daughter ordered scones! The Granola, in particular, was full of flavour and one of the best I have ever eaten - and I've tried a few! See here for details. For a full article on Inner Light Tearooms, see here.
