For many people, like myself, going out for breakfast with friends and family is more enjoyable than going out for any other meal in the day. Nothing beats a good coffee, a healthy breakfast and good conversation to set the tone for a relaxing weekend ahead. If you are watching your budget, it is also cheaper to go out for breakfast than to buy a decadent dinner around the Nelson Bay region. These cafes, below, are my personal favourite breakfast cafes around Nelson Bay - where have you discovered? Please leave a comment at the top of this article and share your top picks. For me, the first café on this list is simply perfect, every time...

The Little Nel café is located on Little Nel/@-32.7206159,152.1430331,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x3f84eb9f966860d2!8m2!3d-32.7206159!4d152.1430331 Government road , on one of the main streets that winds down the hill to Nelson Bay. It is on a sharp, steep hill, so it is off the beaten path for many visitors to the area - however it is busy with locals. Once you discover it however, you will want to sit down at their outdoor verandah, relax with a beautifully-made coffee and run your eyes through the creative, healthy menu . Whatever you choose on the menu will be presented with intricate care and taste equally as good as it looks. If you want something lighter, also check out the muffins and raw healthy slices in their display cabinet - every one of them is a winner (yes, we have tried them all!). Mermaids Cafe at Shoal Bay Country Club is a particularly popular venue opposite the scenic Shoal Bay, just a Bay, New South Wales 2315/Shoal Bay Country Club, 35-45 Shoal Bay Rd, Shoal Bay NSW 2315/@-32.7163579,152.1456804,14z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b7383c232b5436d:0x5017d681632f200!2m2!1d152.151111!2d-32.715!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b7386a95c396ae7:0x6c61f90ff4ad872c!2m2!1d152.1756408!2d-32.7204667!3e0 5 minute drive around the water from Nelson Bay. This popular and light-filled cafe has plenty of seating inside, so it doesn't matter if you arrive mid-morning, you should still be able to get a table. The Shoal Bay Country Club was given a $6 million dollar makeover in 2018 and is the place to be for chilled-out breakfasts at Mermaids Cafe, seafood platters on the patio for lunch and cocktails overlooking the water, until late.

This bustling venue gets better every time we visit, with efficient service with a smile. The food is delicious, the coffee is outstanding and the location can't be beaten. In House Kitchen is located in the heart of HOUSE Kitchen/@-32.722369,152.144593,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xe37c12cd7681cdbf!8m2!3d-32.722369!4d152.144593 Nelson Bay , with inviting décor and style oozing from every distressed piece of wood, hanging plant and planter box. It is one of the most popular breakfast cafes in town and could easily fit in amongst the cafes in Bondi or Sydney, with its coastal Hamptons style and extensive, creative menu .
