Excellently maintained botanic gardens can whisk us away to another world in a matter of minutes. Regardless of where we are, taking time out from everyday life is crucial to our physical and mental wellbeing. I have spent hours exploring many of these beautiful oases around regional New South Wales and here are four of my favourites.
Orange Botanic Gardens is the spot for ultimate relaxation. Its naturally undulating landscape features both native and exotic plants such as casuarinas, acacias, viburnums, roses and magnolias among others. I particularly enjoyed the serenity of the billabong which also supports a variety of birdlife.
Situated off Coronation Drive,
Dubbo Regional Botanic Gardens comprises five distinctive spaces with each having its own theme. Although all were beautifully developed, the Shoyoen Garden caught my attention straight away. It stood out as an authentic landscape of a traditional Japanese garden. The waterfall, streams, lake and tea hut are some of its significant elements. A wander through the Sensory Garden was just as rewarding too. Besides its rose bed and herb garden, who could resist the enticing stepping stones across the lake?
Down south, I was rather impressed with the Willans Hill Miniature Railway at
Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens . A ride on the train will weave you through woodlands, into a tunnel and over a bridge. Just remember to wear covered shoes! And, some planning is definitely required as these trains only operate every first and third Sunday of the month. Tickets are $4 per person.
The
Albury Botanic Gardens is also worth considering especially if you have the kids with you. Its enchanting children's area consists of a life-sized dinosaur, living cubbies, a fairy temple and a troll cave. There are also stimulating trails that will pave the way for further exploration. You'll be pleased to know that the area is fully fenced too.
