Longer and warmer days are just around the corner, if not here already, so there is no better time to get your bike out of storage or take up cycling.
With more designated cycle lanes around the city, new riders should feel more comfortable and safe cruising around. If you're still unsure, the City of Sydney offers
free cycling courses to encourage the public to join the movement.
Cycling to work is a great way to start and end your day. The exercise will get your blood pumping, giving you energy that lasts and serves as a relaxing way to end the day. Plus you might find that you'll cut down on your commute time.
Aside from the commuting aspect biking makes for a great weekend activity. There certainly is no shortage of biking activities around Sydney, some of which are reviewed here at Weekend Notes including
Manly Bike Tours , trails at
Olympic Park , and more as suggested in the discussion of
Sydney's best bike trail .
Interested but not sure where to start and what to buy? You can always pick up a cheap, second hand bike from
Gumtree but if you're serious about hitting the trails and commuting by bike, then you may want to visit one of Sydney's cycling shops.
Most know
Clarence Street Cyclery , a well-established shop that has been around since 1975 which offers cycling expertise but can be on the pricey side. Also on Clarence Street is
MC Cyclery , a newer shop that opened earlier in 2011. My brief experience there was pleasant plus the prices seemed easy on the budget as well.
Over the bridge,
Cranks Bike Store is ideal for those working and playing in or around North Sydney. Those on the city fringe have
Inner City Cycle close by in Glebe too.
No doubt there are bike shops abound so who do you think is top notch? What bike shops in Sydney have given you fine service and are reasonably priced? Who would you recommend to a new rider in Sydney?
