Whether you are swimmer, surfer, snorkeller or simply enjoy relaxing at beaches, the list below features the best beaches across Sydney and surrounds.

1. Clovelly Beach

With its concrete promenades and sea walls, Clovelly Beach resembles a gigantic ocean pool rather than a beach. It is well-known for its spectacular snorkelling experiences as well as its plethora of edible sea life (eastern rock lobster, southern rock lobster and blacklip abalone can be caught here). It is part of the Bronte-Coogee Aquatic Reserve.

Highlights include spotting out the giant blue groper fish.

2. Shelly Beach, Manly

Part of the Cabbage Tree Bay Reserve, this protected marine reserve Beach is a cove located near Manly Beach. It is popular with snorkellers, divers, and paddleboarders.
The waters are calm and protected, making it perfect for the little ones to enjoy or learn how to snorkel and paddleboard.
Highlights include fewer crowds, an abundance of marine life including Port Jackson sharks, cow tails, blue gropers, stingrays, colourful fish, weedy sea dragons, octopuses, and if you are very lucky turtles and fairy penguins.

3. Balmoral Beach

Before the rest of the world comes alive, Balmoral is already filled with early-morning swimmers, stand-up paddleboarders and walkers. This is one of Sydney's most beautiful beaches at the doorsteps of luxury. Weekends the atmosphere is transformed to carnival-like with bathers, runners, picnickers and sunbathers.

Highlights include the nearby cafes; Bathers' Pavilion and the Rotunda, which both date back to the 1930s.

4. Bronte Beach

Bronte Beach is the perfect beach if you like to catch surf, the beach it often has rough waves, and it popular with surfers, however, swimmers can enjoy the waters safely in the Bogey Hole- a little pool ringed by rocks, or the ocean pool which is located at the southern end of the beach.
Highlights include the huge grassy park, Bogey Hole, Ocean Pool, the plentiful barbecues, and kiosks.

5. Palm Beach

Famous for the site of Home and Away's Summer Bay, this famous beach has something for everyone, from surfing, shallows at the southern end for paddlers, swimming, and walks nearby.

Highlights include views of the charming Barrenjoey Head Lighthouse which dates back 1881, kiosks, and Home and Away sites nearby.

6. Wattamolla Beach

Located in the spectacular Royal National Park, Wattamolla Beach makes the perfect day trip! Wattamolla Beach is also home to a waterfall that splashes still into a clear lagoon, which is great for the little ones.
Highlights include surrounding woodlands, mangroves, rainforests, coastal heathland, cabbage tree palms, barbecue area, waterfall and the lagoon.

7. Collins Flat Beach

Nestled between North Head and Little Manly Cove, this beach is home to spectacular nature wonderlands including a trickling waterfall, lush vegetation, and views across the Heads. If you are lucky you can spot the very adorable fairy penguins.
Highlights include lookouts and views, waterfall, and seclusion. There are no shops or barbecue facilities, so come prepared.

8. Little Congwong Beach

This white-sand beach is located in the beautiful Kamary Botany Bay National Park and is home to beautiful, calm turquoise water as well as excellent walking trails.
The beach is perfect for families with little ones as there are no waves. It is popular with snorkellers and divers.

9. Milk Beach, Vaucluse

This hidden beach is something of a secret! It is located behind the historic Strickland House and offers calm, clear waters with an array of shady spots.
Highlights include observing seaplanes taking off from Rose Bay, snorkelling & diving opportunities and at times you will share the beach with less than a handful of people, as well as the spectacular Sydney harbour views.

10. Murray Rose Pool, Double Bay

Known as Redleaf, the local council changed the name of this popular harbourside beach in honour of Olympic swimmer in 2012, Murray Rose. The beach can be accessed from a walk down very steep steps past the café and grassy areas.
Highlights include the two floating platforms and wrap-around pontoon.

11. Bondi Beach
This much-loved and popular Sydney beach is home to a crescent of golden sand and turquoise waters. It is perfect for swimming and surfing.

12. Gordon's Bay

Hidden between Clovelly and Coogee Beach, this protected beach is an offshore reef that is popular with snorkellers and divers. It is home to the 500-metre chain trail that leads to a series of concrete-filled drums with informative displays about the local marine life.
Highlights include Sydney's only underwater nature trail, the abundance of marine life including sponges, starfish, sea urchins, cuttlefish, anemones, blue gropers, and more.

Manly Beach is home to an array of water-based activities including stand-up paddling, swimming, surfing, kayaking, and jet boating. This golden sand beach is also home to the scenic promenade that runs alongside the beach.

This beach is part of the Long Reef Aquatic Reserve which covers 76 hectares between Collaroy and Dee Why Beach. The beach is a haven for snorkellers and divers with the many marine life that can be found here, including feather stars, starfish, heart urchins, sea slugs, colourful, and more.
Highlights include the spectacular views out to the ocean (especially at sunrise) and snorkelling opportunities.
