It's a well-known fact that the west coast boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Here in Perth, we are lucky to have pristine white sand, gorgeous blue waves, and often a bounty of surrounding cafes and local eateries that can help to turn a trip to the beach into an eventful day in the sun!

Here are some of the best spots to visit on a fresh sunny day!

Mettams Pool
A family favourite and an excellent place to stop for a snorkel and a beachside picnic! Mettams Pool is a busy area of the beach for a reason - the water is often calm and protected by the surrounding reef and rock banks to provide an area that is both safe and teeming with marine life. Snorkelling in this area is very popular, and it is definitely worth heading out with your goggles and flippers! There is such a wonderful variety of fish to observe, and making it over the rock bank and into the deep caverns can be a real thrill.

Handy tips - heading over the rock bank into the deeper snorkelling areas can be tricky depending on the tide, so be aware of the challenge. Please try not to sit or stand on any part of the rock banks/reef- it can be incredibly damaging to the marine life. Also, remember to wear sunscreen! It is far too easy to get burnt when you spend the day out snorkelling! (Speaking from experience here!)

Cottesloe
Cottesloe Beach is such a coastal gem. The waters are so often calm, and the surrounding lawns and trees make it a perfect spot to picnic. Stand up paddle boarding is a great activity to try here, otherwise, a dip in the water will provide welcome relief on a warm day! Surrounding cafes also make a trip for coffee and gelato a must!

Scarborough Beach
Scarborough beach is an incredibly popular spot that boasts some impressive waves, and now even has an outdoor pool for those not wanting to brave the salty shores! Getting down early in the day is a good idea because the wind tends to set in during the afternoon, so be sure to bring your towel and enjoy a much-needed soak in the sun (or water)! There is a lovely strip of bars and a range of restaurants to suit different dining styes along the waterfront, which is a perfect way to end a day of beach fun. Personal recommendation - The Local Shack for burgers and cocktails!

Hillarys Boat Harbour
Another family favourite, Hillarys has a wonderfully sheltered beach fit with a jetty for jumping and sliding into the cool ocean water! There is also a playground and various areas for families and children to play and picnic. If the family beach atmosphere isn't your style, then Hillarys can still be a great place to get a dose of salty air whilst treating yourself to a coffee and a snack at one of the many cafes and restaurants. There are also a collection of quaint stores where you can buy anything from souvenirs to dresses, to crystals and incense. The variety that Hillarys has to offer makes a trip there a great day activity for all.

Pinnaroo Point
Okay, so this spot is absolutely perfect if you want a relaxing dose of beach time minus the crowds. It is a relatively secluded section of beach north of Hillarys and is the best place to have an afternoon beach siesta.
