If you are looking for delicious cakes, fresh sourdough bread and a good ol' fashioned bakery that smells like heaven when you walk in the door, there are some tasty selections around the Nelson Bay region. Although bread is often the main reason why people visit bakeries, many locals also visit in search of tasty pies, sausage rolls or flavoursome hot pasties, with hot chunks of meat that get your mouth steaming. Whether you are looking for an apple slice to eat for morning tea, a pie for lunch or a crusty cob to have with soup tonight, you will find it all in the local bakery.

These are the ones that our family have discovered - where is your local favourite? Please leave a comment at the top of this article and share your local tips. You know you're onto a winner when your stomach starts to rumble as soon as you walk in the door...

Two Bobs Bakery opened late in 2018 and the locals instantly embraced this new small business with gusto. The smell of freshly-made sourdough bread wafted out the door, coffee smells permeated the air and locals were seen walking out with smiles on their faces. It wasn't long before people were talking about this new kid in town - particularly for their sourdough bread and traditional loaf options. This small bakery can be found on Yacaaba Street in Nelson Bay - make sure you try them when you are in town! See here for details.

Baker's La Vie
is located at Salamander Bay shops and is a tucked away locals secret with old fashioned charm. This little bakery does a roaring trade with the local workers, tradies and families, as they stop off on the way to or from school. They offer flakey pies, sausage rolls, spinach rolls, bread, a wide variety of reasonably prices cakes (try the apple slice!) and a sandwich bar - which is exceptionally cheap and tasty. Where else can you buy a chicken and salad roll, jam-packed with ingredients and sweet chilli sauce for $5.90 these days? See here for a map to find it.

Bayz Patisserie is located in Nelson Bay and is popular for its pies, bread, sausage rolls and cakes. It is a handy location as it has a few seats outside the bakery, so you can buy a pie and sit outside with the breeze blowing along the street front. This bakery was recommended to us by a local for for its Steak and Kidney Pie in particular. See here for a map to find it.

Saxby's Bakery Cafe is located in Salt Ash, on the main road that travels in and out of Nelson Bay. Even though it's 25 minutes from the bay itself, many tourists and locals pass it every day on the way in and out of town. This local bakery is always busy and is a handy place to pick up some supplies on the way home. See here for details and here for a map.

Do you have a regular place where you pop in for a pie, cake, a loaf of bread or a six-pack of Easter buns straight out of the oven? If so, please leave a comment at the top of this article and share your local tips and suggestions. When you find a good bakery, you don't ever want it to change...
