Autumn is the most spectacular time of year in cool climate areas bringing mass displays of colour from the deciduous trees and is a perfect time to get out of the house and enjoy mother nature.
To make the most of all the autumn colour here is my list of 10 great gardens to visit in Autumn:
Alfred Nicolas gardens are spectacular at anytime of the year but in Autumn it really shines with the most stunning array of deciduous trees in any one garden within the Dandenong Ranges. Alfred Nicholas gardens is my number one pick for sensational colour and a photographers delight. Simply stunning. Entry is free.
Tieve Tara is a 7.5 acre private garden at Mt Macedon and has 2 lakes and a bridge inspired by Claude Monet's style, has a lovely set out and a beautiful array of autumn trees. Entry to this garden is $8 for adults and children under 12 are free. Tieve Tara is open 10am - 4pm weekdays and 10:30am-5pm on weekends. For more information, click here.
Pirianda is another garden in the Dandenong Ranges and was the former home of the Ansells. This garden is all about the trees and although I haven't been to this one in autumn I'm sure it will be ablaze with colour. This garden is the steepest and although it has new asphalt paths in most of the areas I wouldn't take anyone with mobility issues down the path. If you or your friend have mobility trouble then you could seek permission to drive down to the house at the bottom of the garden which is currently used for conferences and has room for two to three cars. Cloudhill is a privately owned restaurant, nursery and garden and I can recommend all areas of Cloudhill from the food to the gardens. Admission Prices: adults $7.50, concession $5, children $4 and families $20.
Forest Glade is located in Mt Macedon and is renowned as one of Australia's finest private gardens and has been established for over 100 years. Entry to the garden is $8 for adults and free for children. Forrest Glade
George Tindale garden is one of my all time favorite gardens because no matter when you visit there is always something striking to see in the garden with colours you will not see elsewhere, from rhododendron's, camellias, hydrangeas to the Autumn trees in full colour and it is always a lovely place for a picnic lunch on the lawns. For a full review and location click here.
R J Hamer Arboretum is not a garden as such but as the name suggests 'a place for trees' ( the Latin meaning for arboretum) here you will find 150 species of native and exotic trees with a spectacular outlook across the Yarra Valley to the Warburton Ranges. To appreciate the RJ Hamer Arboretum you will need to put on your walking shoes and take one of the many paths in the area including the Olinda Valley walking trail. If you just want to see the magnificent view you can cheat and view it from the car park.
National Rhododendron garden is of course a beautiful garden when the rhododendrons and camellias are in full bloom but it's also magnificent to visit in autumn when the leaves change and the outlook over the ranges is full of colour. The gardens are free to visit and it's a worthy spot to stop for a stroll or a picnic. For more info click here.
Silvan Reservoir is not a garden as such but a park with some lovely autumn trees and is a lovely picnic ground with BBQ's , playground, toilets and plenty of space to stroll around and for the kids to play in the fallen leaves.

Where is your favourite autumn garden, park of town in Victoria?
Great suggestions and tips but your "Click here" link for the Private Open Gardens did not work for me. And when I typed "opengardensa.org.au"
in myself, I discovered it was for Open Gardens in SA, not Melbourne.
