A guide to Australia Day festivals in and around Melbourne

On 26 January 2017, Victoria will come alive with a plethora of events and activities aimed at celebrating Australia Day with pride and unity. Read on to find out about your nearest Australia Day festival.

1. Australia Day Official Flag Raising Ceremony & Parade
All are invited to the Flag Raising Ceremony at the Melbourne Town Hall which will start off Victoria's official Australia Day celebrations. This event will include dignitaries in their ceremonial attire and the Tri-Service Royal Guard of Honour. The Flag Raising Ceremony will be followed by the Australia Day Parade which will snake its way along Swanston Street. Every year thousands of people from over 90 community and cultural groups partake in this rally which will showcase our wonderful multicultural society. Click here to read more.

2. Rye Australia Day Festival
On 26 January 2017, Rye in Mornington Peninsula will celebrate Australia Day with fantastic festivities. The wonderful lineup of events includes a free community sausage sizzle at 12:30pm followed by a circus show at 1pm. Music and dance performances will entertain visitors all afternoon including a fabulous performance by the band Andy Phillips and Cadillac Walk which will be hosted at 3pm. The official proceedings will take place at 5:30pm.

3. Australia Day at Docklands
Australia Day will be celebrated literally with a bang in Docklands with a fantabulous fireworks display. Live entertainment will regale visitors from 6pm to 10:30pm. 4. Dromana Australia Day
The Dromana Australia Day committee will hold huge Australia Day celebrations commencing at 8am and finishing at 1.30pm. The event will start with a free community breakfast followed by the flag raising ceremony. A wide array of kid's activities will keep the little ones busy. You can spend the day playing one of the many sports available including lawn bowls, netball, handball and enjoying live music and dance performances. Food and drinks will be in abundance. 5. Australia Day at Government House
To mark Australia Day, the Governor of Victoria will throw open the door of the inimitable Government House. Members of the public will get to grace the red carpet of the Government House and walk through the grounds and gardens and enjoy live music, picnic and scones from the Country Women's Association. 6. RACV Australia Day Festival
Kings Domain Gardens will be abuzz with colourful and riveting Australia Day celebrations. There will be live entertainment and vintage and classic cars display after the Australia Day Parade.
