As a teenager the words 'Maccas all day breakfast' would have been music to my ears; I now can't handle the idea of imitation maple syrup on mass produced 'hotcakes'. Looking back I don't think I ever even enjoyed Maccas breakfast, it was just the novelty of it all.

After the fast food giant announced the return of their all day breakfast a few months ago, I thought it a good time to pay homage to some small-time locals; below are some of my favourite eateries around Adelaide, and their All Day Breakfast menus - I'd really love to hear of your favourite spots.

Pickle In The Middle Pickle In The middle is one of my all time favourite Adelaide eateries. Their menu is super creative, and changes from time to time, it's not your regular cafe spot. I can recommend:Black Sesame WafflesOvernight waffles, cardamom-spiced whipped mascarpone & yoghurt, fresh orange segments, pistachios, salted brown sugar syrup.

These were great, so soft and complemented perfectly by the cardamom-spiced mascarpone & yoghurt, and the salted brown sugar syrup - not too sweet but added just enough to the dish. I should note here that these are not your traditional Belgium style sugar waffles.

The Cheese and Pickle Toastie

The Cheese & Pickle Toastie is the longest standing menu item at Pickle In The Middle. The modern Unley eatery started as a pop-up stall in the central markets, selling gourmet pickle sandwiches, I suppose this dish is a nod, if you will to the eateries humble beginnings.

Mind you, this dish is not your average Toastie; A slow overnight process is used to make the house-made parmesan crusted focaccia, it's then stuffed with house-made mustard zucchini pickles and smoked mozzarella. You are also given the option to add Jalapeños and/or Newberry Watson Ham. Served with that day's salad this is probably one of Adelaide's most famous sandwiches.
The Loose Caboose

Situated in the uber-cool location of the Bowden train station, the building has been revamped into a modern cafe - even the former arched platform doorways, are now transformed into windows, allowing diners to watch the trains go by. Though offering more than just the novelty of its train station abode, the food here is fantastic, the team being so successful that this was their first cafe of three!

I can recommend:

Spanish Omelette

Roast Potato, chorizo and spinach omelette with Verde and toasted sour dough.

A beautiful medley of flavours, perfectly balanced, the flavour of the chorizo permeated through the egg.

French Toast

Vanilla twice baked brioche, caramelised banana, espresso gel with mascarpone & honeycomb.

Every element of this was amazing, this is not your average French Toast. The combinations of The brioche's high egg and butter content, made into French toast and then baked (not fried) gave it a beautiful texture, almost like a bread custard.
All its condiments were also fantastic, the bitter espresso syrup balanced the sweetness in the dish and the honeycomb was the best I've ever tried.
The Pantry on Egmont

Tucked away in the side streets of Hawthorn - near the former Hawthorn train platform - lies the quaint little cafe, The Pantry on Egmont. You'll recognise it by its vintage seating and the fact that *surprise* it is situated on Egmont Tce.
The food here is amazing, beautiful local produce and dishes of the highest standard.

I can recommend:

Bespoke Eggs (with Mushrooms & Haloumi)

Two free range eggs poached, scrambled, or fried on toasted sourdough.

And you can add any of the following (for various costs): an extra egg, bacon, grilled halloumi, house made baked beans, slow roasted tomato, open field mushroom, wilted baby spinach, avocado, house smoked salmon, sweet potato hash brown, house made hollandaise.

I was tempted to put together a Benedict or Florentine style eggs, but instead opted for one of my favourite combos - mushrooms & halloumi.

The scrambled eggs were perfect - I even lost a few forkfuls to my brunching companion across the table. The mushrooms and halloumi were also fantastic, both cooked perfectly - crispy outer, gooey centred halloumi & delicious mushrooms.

French Toast

Quite simply a really great French toast, not something that could easily be replicated at home; I can't describe it much more as I only had a taste, but my eating companion loved it.

Best ambience to enjoy all day breakfast

I'm very fussy and I have quite high standards if I'm paying for food, I feel compelled to be honest, while the food at the following cafes is lovely, it's not quite on the same par as the above three (this is of course, personal taste & opinion), but the next three have fantastic settings to dine in and the service is also fantastic so they deserve to be mentioned here.

Red House

Red House is well known amongst vintage lovers, what started out as a regular stall at the Gilles St Market eventually turned into a vintage store & cafe in the former North Adelaide train station. Unlike the aforementioned rail station turned eatery, Red House Cafés interior still holds it's old-world charm. The spot is really a cool spot to check out, complete with ticket window turned order counter.

Finding Carrick Hill is a little like falling down the rabbit hole, following the dirt road around seems as if you are on the road to nowhere until you find respite in the car park. Once parked, follow the zig-zagging staircase down to a stone path, by this stage things look promising - the garden surrounds are getting more and more beautiful.

A little further down the path - past the pond fountain - a beautiful old mansion begins to reveal itself, here you are, you have found Carrick Hill House.

On a side note, you can have tours of the house, and you can utilise the garden space for picnics (so long as the area has not been booked for a wedding or a function).

To find the cafe, walk around to the back of the house until you see this doorway, enter through and you have found 'The Food Business'.

You can sit in the cafe (which is part of the main building), in the marquee or sit under the sun umbrellas and enjoy the garden view.

The Original Pancake Kitchen

In all honesty, I haven't actually eaten here in years, but as an Adelaidian, I felt I had to add it to the list.

The Original Pancake Kitchen, has been serving up pancakes since 1965, starting as a little hole in the wall, in the former dwellings of a burned-out delicatessen, popularity grew and one by one so did its rooms; for the most part it's history is unbeknown to the majority of diners, yet it holds such a sense of nostalgia for so many Adelaideans.

Many of us have dined in the iconic spot, with work groups, family, friends, at 2,3 even 5am on our way home from a big night out!
In the mood for sweet or savoury, you can have either, just so long as it's accompanied by a pancake.

I always loved its old world ambience, it was always part of the charm for me; coupled with the nostalgia, the uniqueness, and novelty of 24hours, one can understand why it lies so fondly in the heart of Adelaideans.
