I love the things we have here in South Australia – the fabulous food, wine, people and places – beauty everywhere. And, for more beauty in my life, I own and operate a gorgeous little gallery called Mrs Harris’ Shop:

Forget 'best before'
There isn't much time left to catch one of SALA's tail-end exhibitions – and it's worth every bit of the effort to get to Praxis Artspace before closing day at the end of this week.

We're all familiar with the 'best before' dates on produce, but these three artists have turned it around to express their preference for using salvaged materials – be they natural or man-made – in their artworks.

Best After
Renate Nisi: Lure for Feeling

Liz Butler, Renate Nisi and Cynthia Schwertsik enjoy the richness of both the histories of their chosen objects and the material deterioration those objects exhibit.

'We fancy we continue this on-going process by giving new readings to old remains. We think them Best After[ their expiry dates', says Liz

Detail from Palimpsest of Journey III, Liz Butler

Between them, in Best After, they've chosen to work with a huge range of materials that encourage us to see our place in the environment.

Best After
Stills from Peri Urban Progress, Cynthia Schwertsik

Cynthia is the winner of this year's SALA Unitcare Moving Images Award for her video work Peri Urban Progress, on show for the exhibition. Take the time to lose yourself in this work and you'll see why it's a winner!

Best After
Renato Nisi's Graft

Renate, whose work Graft was highly commended in the 2018 Fleurieu Biennale, uses found objects, some natural, others man-made.

You'll find bones, feathers and piano keys in her work – and everything in between.

Best After
Blue Streak I & II, Liz Butler

Liz also strives to bring together the natural and the man-made, worked across a variety of media that include printmaking, sculpture and installation.

Don't miss Bonded to Terra Firma, strategically placed in a dark alcove for best impact.

Best After
Fault Line, Liz Butler

Don't be satisfied that this tiny taste sums up this wonderful exhibition. It doesn't! There's something new to enjoy and ponder at every turn, to say nothing of the inventive ways that these three artists have worked their magic. You'll not look at copper wire, water-damaged paper, or an old rainwater tank in the same way again – ever!

Best After
Match for Mountains, Renate Nisi

Best After is showing at the fabulous Praxis Artspace, 68 Gibson Street Bowden until the end of the week.
