There's just something about summer that makes you want to eat healthily. Smoothies, juices and cold, fresh fruit seem to hit the spot on a hot day - making the traditional Acai Bowl the perfect way to start the morning. The smoothie-type base of the Acai Bowl contains pulp from the Acai fruit, which comes from Brazil and is one of the most antioxidant-rich fruit on earth. This popular breakfast dish rose to popularity a few years ago now, but it is still just as popular in Canberra - providing us with super foods, fruit, fibre, antioxidants and everything our bodies need to start the day....as well as being incredibly delicious!

Around Canberra there are a number of cafes who offer Acai Bowls on their menu, however, there are 2 stand-outs amongst the group, in my opinion. Where is your favourite? If yours isn't listed here, please leave a comment on the top of this article and share your tasty local's secret. What better way is there to start a summer morning?

Eighty Twenty is a healthy café , located near the (newly-painted!) rainbow roundabout on Lonsdale Street in Braddon. It prides itself on its healthy menu and philosophy of eating 80% healthy and 20% for treats, to maintain a healthy lifestyle - hence its name. Their menu has 3 Acai Bowls to choose from for $15 each - The O Bowl (acai, banana & apple juice, topped with granola, banana, strawberry, & coconut), The Crunch Bowl (acai, banana, cacao, peanut butter & almond milk, topped with banana, granola, cacao nibs, crushed almonds and honey) and The Hulk Bowl (acai, banana, avocado, spinach & apple juice, topped with kiwi, granola, goji berries & honey).

They are all mouth-wateringly more-ish, however, my favourite is the Crunch Bowl - the combination of the soft banana, hard nuts, salty peanut butter and sweetness of the honey drizzled over the top, is a breakfast that never gets old. See here for details.

Sweet Bones is located right next door to Eighty Twenty above, making it easy to find the two of Canberra's most healthy cafes. Sweet Bones is a vegan café and just like Eighty Twenty next door, it is extremely popular - with their tables often full each weekend. Sweet Bones have one Acai Bowl on their menu for $16 - and they do it well! The fruits are sweet and the granola is crunchy and there is nothing to fault about such a pretty dish, washed down with one of the most delicious coffees in Canberra. Alternatively, you can also choose a smoothie from their range and they will add seasonal fruits and granola to make a delicious, personalised bowl. See here for details.

Special Mentions...

Although these two would be the stand-out options in Canberra, there are also a few other cafes around the city who offer the antioxidants-rich Acai Bowls on their menu. You don't have to walk too far from Eighty Twenty and Sweet Bones to find Toasted café, just across the road from them both. They offer an Acai Bowl for $11 as a fruit alternative to their breakfast toasts and lunchtime toasties. Another popular option is at Double Shot café in Deakin - with an Acai Bowl for $16 that is bursting with kiwi fruit, fresh berries, banana, organic coconut yoghurt and nut and seed crumble.

Although they are a popular breakfast dish in summer, why not enjoy a healthy Acai Bowl all year around and give your body the boost it needs to get through every season. There is no better way to start the day...
